I'm looking at a 998 that's on Craigslist in the Palos Verdes Peninsula area of LA.

I, however, live in Kansas.

I haven't talked to the guy yet as I'm not sure what to say at this point except "Hey, nice bike, but I live 1500 miles from you..." If I can get some details from him, is there anyone in the area who would be willing to go by and have a look at the bike for me?

I'm looking at Forward-Air right now for shipping. I'm not sure if I'd end up spending more or less doing that than just driving to California. :P

I'm sure someone on here has purchased a bike long-distance. Any insights or recommendations?

No help on that bike, but here's an extremely nice 996 that I can vouch for.  ;D Not mine...a buddy's. He just got an RSV4 Factory.

If you can come to an agreement on price ask him to take it to Scotty's MotoServicio in Signal Hill (not very far away). Scotty's would probably charge you less then $150 (but I'd ask first) to check the bike out mechanically. After that, if you completed the sale, I would be happy to help you out with transport. I would just have the shipper pick it up from Scotty's instead of using forward air. I used a service once and it ran about $600 from Michigan to So Cal. If you can't store it at Scotty's until the shipper came I could bring it to my house for pick up.

Talked to the guy this evening. He's sending me some hi-res pictures of the bike. Seemed to have little interest in shipping if he has to arrange for it.

Said he has someone local coming back to look at the bike tomorrow. So, we shall see.

Your 998 is safe and sound in my garage. Hopefully the Hyper doesn't try to have it's way with her before your shipper shows up.

Outstanding!!! [clap] Way to go guys! Glad the deal worked out and you are back in Tamburini heaven. What was the deal on the carbon side covers? From the pics on CL it looked all the world like a carbon airbox. ??? So are they just CF covers?

Either way, happy it all worked out and a big  [thumbsup] to hbliam for all the help. How about posting a pic of you pulling a wheelie on it or a burn out before it goes to Scotty's? Just saying... [laugh]

And the weather is worse still today. 21 degrees out right now, and the grit hasn't cleared itself from the roads. [roll]

But it's supposed to be better over the weekend, so hopefully I can get out and about. Maybe even get it over for inspection so I can get it tagged...

Also, I figured out what's up with those carbon side covers. The airbox and runners are plastic, but someone has carved away part of the plastic side covers, installed dzus fittings, and put on standalone side covers. This explains why it has side covers with fasteners, which is something I'd never seen before.

Changes so far: I've removed the dark gray 'Ducati' stickers from one lower fairing, and will do the other when I get inspired to pull the bodywork again. I figured saying the brand three times on each side was somewhat excessive...

There was at one time a carbon airbox with removable side covers. It's possible those are the covers from that set-up if your airbox is plastic.

Interesting about the cf covers. Never seen those before. Did they do a good job installing them? As in sano, clean, well done, etc?? My 996S has Ducati Performance stickers running parallel with the seam on the side fairings. The previous owner put them on. I thought about removing them but laziness took over and I got used to them. I still agree with you about removing yours. Just too lazy to get rid of mine. ;D

Is that a dimple dent on the right front corner of the tank or is that just a reflection in the picture? Looks like a real clean 998. [thumbsup] Hope the weather improves for you. I have a funny feeling I know how you'll be spending the weekend! [laugh] [moto] [wine]
