Title: Deer Near Miss
Post by: yotogi on February 13, 2011, 05:51:14 PM
Went out for a ride with a buddy of mine today in the hill country outside of Austin. We didn't have a lot of time so we kept is pretty close to town. Here is us getting onto Hamilton Pool Road when I had a bit of a pucker moment.

Digging Hamilton Pool Road!! [thumbsup] Lived in Austin all during the 70s when I raced bicycles and supposedly went to UT! [laugh] Would do a bike training ride during the morning and dupe the same ride that afternoon or before dark on the '78 SR500, '78 Guzzi 850 LeMans or the '80 CB750F. Back in the good old days when the 620 loop around the lake was just a little 2 lane country road and the hill up 2222 was called the "Wall". The good bicycle training routes were also great scooter rides! [moto] The old state road course championship loop was called the "Buda loop" and the first race of the year was always La Primavera in March around the high school off Bee Caves 2244 I think it was in West Lake Hills. Good times!!

Oh... by the way, glad you missed the deer! [thumbsup]

Wow!

that was actually a really great clip of how fast it can happen and how it would be almost impossible to react in time.

did you stop and buy a lottery ticket on the way home?

YES : All give a little thanks to the deer hunters, Someone might have just plugged the deer with your number on it. Can You imagine what it would be like if some "folks" had their way about stopping the hunt? [bow_down]

I really don't like hunting, but every year I try to find someone that will take me out so I can kill a few of those 200lb rats.  Around here, they're more dangerous than other drivers.  About as intelligent though :)

Great clip.

The closest one I've ever had with a deer was on my Harley while doing 60 mph.  While traveling a farm to market road that was elevated quite a bit (through a flood area the road was built on kind of a levy with very steep banks).  I never even knew the deer was there till it hit pavement.  The deer shot out in front of me and I missed it by about 3 feet.  Maybe it didn't realize it had already crossed my path but when it got just past my line of travel, it decided to try and turn and outrun me.  As I went by, I could have reached out and slapped it on the rump.  I remember that I could hear it's hooves sliding and clicking on the pavement as it tried to gain grip.

Then once while on my Versys, I was traveling on the road that leads to my camphouse in the woods.  The road is barely wide enough to be 2 lanes with no divider stripping.  The road ditch starts just off the pavement with thick trees and brush just past the ditch.  I was leaving my place late in the evening with the sun flashing through the trees kinda like a strobe light.  Because of the flashing of sunlight, I didn't see a deer that was grazing in the ditch.  As I got close, it decided to run along the ditch to escape the machine that was chasing it (that would be me and my Versys).  Luckily, it found a gap in the brush and cut off to the woods instead of crossing the road.  If it had chosed the path across the road, I never would known what happened.

Duuuude!   Good video though =)

One of my riding buds hit one last October.  80mph, split it in half, and managed to keep the bike upright!  $3000 worth of damage to his cherry FZ1 (and ruined leathers... I assume from the blood, but maybe some internal damage).  There was blood and fur in the tire beads!

Forgot to mention that this is what a deer did (indirectly) to my roommate's bike last fall.  They're like the pigeons of the woodland areas.  Filthy rats.

I saw him as soon as he stepped out of the treeline thank goodness. I just had time to piece the video together last night, so I will go back and see how long it took from the time I can see the deer in the video to the time I was on the brakes. Since the full-rez video is 60fps I should be able to get a good idea of how quick I was. To be honest, it felt like I was way more clear than the video shows so I have to say that I was luckier than the I felt at the time!

I hear you about the great roads just a short ride out from town. We took 1431 out to Marble Falls and then came back into town on Hamilton Pool. I had planned out a longer ride that would have included quite a few more great twisties out there, but just didn't have the time for a 6 hour long haul.

It is too bad about all of the great roads that used to be, closer in to town. Most of them now are much more built up or heavily trafficked, but there still are a ton to be had!

It's amazing how quickly that can happen. I had a near impact with a deer last summer.  I was doing about 50 on my MTS 620, came around a bend and I swear the damn thing strolled right in front of me, and froze.  I put on the brakes, squeezing harder as I got closer, and just about the time my back started sliding the deer (now about 6 feet away, although it felt like a foot) jumped away.  I remember thinking "Damn, that's it" right when he jumped.

Yep, they have paved over the hill country around Austin for sure. The last time I was on Mount Bonnell a few years ago I couldn't believe how the distant hills were covered with mansions! It was sad to see. It would be suicide to ride a bicycle on 2222 or the 620 lake loop. Still some great hill country roads, you just have to work harder to get to them. [thumbsup] Here in DFW it's just easier to head up through SE Oklahoma and into Arkansas. Great roads up there for sure... and deer! [bang] I hear there are also wild turkeys in Oklahoma. [laugh] OK, maybe one less. ;D

Man that was a close one! I out on Fischer Road outside of Wimberley and saw a few this weekend as well. Normally they are not out so much in the middle of the day.
Damn deer!

Lucky and glad for it I bet.
On our last Austin trip we took the same road to Marble Falls and ate pie.  Banana cream is the best  [drool]
I swear you guys need more hunters because there are herds of them surrounding Austin and even into Kerville and Bandera.  I see them on the side of the road no matter the time, heat or cold.

Wouldn't that be a near hit?

Never understood this near miss business.

Deer and Buzzards, a few miles from here last year a rider hit a buzzard do only 60 they figure.  Hit him right in the chest and trauma to the heart killed him instantly.  Darn, no hunting season on buzzards.......

All else considered that is called nothing but good timing, If you would not scratched your ass for two seconds that morning?  Congratulations, you won! [clap]

Ok, so Near Hit...  :)

I was following my buddy and he missed the turn that you see in the video. We were headed back when I let him pass (you see that at the beginning of the video just after the turn). It is completely possible that if he had made the turn the first time the situation would have been completely different. Luck was certainly shining on me that ride!

OH crap!   Wow..  Glad you're alright.  I actually hit a big one on Wednesday morning, but was in my car.  She flew up probably 20ft in the air and I saw her flying over me out of the sunroof after she hit the front of my car.  $3500 in damage to the front of my car and I was only going maybe 30mph.  I couldn't help but think that if I'd been on one of my bikes, I'd probably be in the same boat the deer is in now.

Whoa..that's no joke!  Way to avoid the collision Yo!!

I had a half dozen of those "pucker moments" riding back home to Lakeway in less than a year that we lived there.  For those who don't know the TX Hill country, Lakeway is about 15 miles outside of Austin.  It's a beautiful ride, with long sweeps all the way but the deer population there is outrageous!  One will not go a day without seeing several deer when driving through Lakeway.   They're typically grazing in people's front yards right along side the streets.  Riding the bike home after sundown out there was not fun at all!
