Title: front disc rattle
Post by: kobes on February 14, 2011, 10:36:46 PM
so i just go my self a 98 monster 900 and the front brakes rattle and have a lot of play in them. can this only be remedied by replacing the whole disk or can i just replace the rivets.
I know the rattle is normal and so is a bit of play but how much play is too much?
thanks

are you sure its not an aftermarket free float rotor? they rattle quite a bit.

yes it is a aftermarket job. it also has rotational play as in it slides front to back as well as side to so is this bad?

If rotational play is too much (don`t have any spec on that)
disc center is worned out and needs replacement.
Sure it easier & cheaper to get new discs instead of repair, centers difficult to find.

Replacing rivets are easy.

do the buttons say anything on them?  like STM?  sounds like you got full floaters. [bacon]

i wasn't sure of the best way to take the photo but the 2 pics show the maximum movement in each direction (http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/Chris_Kobier/th_IMG_0259.jpg?t=1297840300)(http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/Chris_Kobier/th_IMG_0260.jpg?t=1297840300)(http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/Chris_Kobier/th_IMG_0261.jpg?t=1297840300)

If the carriers are steel, looks like they are, a magnet will tell you for sure, the wear might be in the buttons.  You would need to disassemble to be sure.  There is no spec that I know of for wear in that area, but I would be more concerned if the wear is in the buttons.

650x650 pics would be better.
If you put wheel flat on the ground, lot of freeplay horizontally, side to side?

(Completely uninformed internet opinion follows:

My rattlers move ~1mm.  If I had yours, based on the wear pattern on the edge of the carriers, I'd be saving for new rotor assemblies.

end of uninformed opinion)

Well, my full floating irons (brembo iron rotor with bcm/antron carrier) arrived yesterday (wanted to replace the swiss cheese rotors on the fixxer-upper M900 I picked up). They only gently rattle in comparison to yours, and have almost zero forward/backward (rotational?) movement. If you are looking to buy an inexpensive but good set of rotors, fetch some of those off eBay - its a steal.

It appears that yours are moving more than just 'left/right' - the willingness for those to move or rotate in the directions that the brake force moment kind of make me leery. There might be an official test or measurement that is employed by the pro's that will say "within tolerance or outside of tolerance", but we'll have to let SpeedDog or another chime in.
