Fired up the oven again for Theo. Just thought I shared some pics.

I dont know how many guys are interested, but I have a few personal jobs that I'm going to do, and will be doing an all day PC run. I'm not sure if this breaks forums rules since I don't do this steadily. But for convenience, I am doing a few color days so i dont have to keep swapping out powders. If this break forum rules, feel free to delete this thread.

But here's Theos brackets. It was really nice to work with CLEAN metals for once. All I had to do was toughen it up with some glass beads heat it and hot flock it + 10 mins.

ok, from someone who's never done any powder coating or had parts done, what sort of work has to be done to the parts when they return prior to putting them back on the bike? For example, if someone wanted to powder coat their header pipe, would anything need to be done first or could it be remounted right away?

Can't powdercoat a header pipe. Have to ceramic coat it. Powdercoat will not withstand header temps.

With all other parts just clean any threaded holes out of overspray and install. It's that easy!

Woot, can't wait to install these.  Got the new blacked out Ohlins forks on a few mins ago.  These will nearly complete the puzzle.  A bit of wiring, and it's riding.

Big upgrades are the BST's, Ohlins damper, custom triples/R&T Ohlins, and the exhaust I made for it.  The HID light, and other bits just round it out.

Here is hoping the BST's and damper make all the difference that people say they will :)

1- Strip any old paint off
2- degrease
3- Etch the surface ( i use glass beads)
4- If steel then immediately wash off the glass beads, dry with cloth and throw in the dry it up quickly (rust). I have heard you can just wipe off the glass beads and spray like that, ive never tried it because i dont want to have to strip and do it over again so i just rewash)

If it is a cast part, then i generally leave it in the oven for about 20-40 minutes depending on what material it is. Out of the oven i wipe it down with alcohol, and then hot flock powder onto it and throw it back in the oven for the required time (each piece is different).



Prep is most of the labor. Cleaning is the hardest part. Sometimes you cant help but get a spec of gas and you get a little defect in the part. For cast aluminum, i find it impossible to not get one or two of those little specs. Some parts are just excessively dirty and it makes for a lot of extra work for me. If i use glass beads on it when its not clean, theres a chance i can just push the grime into the pores and the coating will come out with specs over that area.

And as bergdoerfer said, you cant PC headers. I have a powder that is rated for 1200 degrees, but i find that it does not really work that well. But it does look nice for exhaust can sleeves.

the real point is to be able to get every bodies item in one shot, so i can spend 1 day stripping original paint, 1 day washing and blasting, and coat it. and do 1 color all at once since i lose a significant amount of powder from switching colors for small batches. this way everyone knows the schedule.

This is called Solar Rain which is over real chrome. However since i couldnt etch the real chrome, the powder litterally flaked off the second it was put to real use.

funny thing is that in china, people there can down this like water... but get wasted in seconds off vodka or any other western spirit.

Thanks for the recommendation on Powder by the Pound, He Man.  I have some flat black that I'll be doing some testing on before reassembling the bike.

Can magnesium be pc'ed? I have a set of yammi TZ wheels that I'm thinking of changing colors.

i really dont know. Never tried. nor have i ever heard of Magnesium being Pc'ed.

ANd regarding that "alcohol", It taste straight up like foul shit. My dad has cases of them because he thinks it will collect value over time. Eitherway, it still tastes straight up wrong.

They need to be hot chromated or chemically treated just like they would need to be for paint.

They can't be blasted and coated without that step.

Thanks... I think I'm going to leave them alone.  I just found out how much a set is worth!  I'll learn to live with the orange color.
