Title: NZ Earthquake
Post by: ungeheuer on February 21, 2011, 11:02:41 PM
The Gods must be angry with those of us down under the Southern Cross  :'(

Bush fires.  Floods.  Cyclone.

And now in Christchurch our Kiwi mates have copped this....

This is the second large quake in six months.

So far 65 have perished. That number is expected to rise as about 200 at least are still trapped in rubble.
Christchurch lost alot of historic old buildings that have withstood over 100 years of previous quakes. The locals will be very sad to lose the historic center of their charming city (small city of 400,000).

My wife has relatives in Christchurch. We haven't got through to them yet. It may take a while.

I only caught a touch of this on the news before I had to head to the office. It's been a rough go for all the Kiwis and Aussies of late. I hope some good news is in the offering for all of them some time soon.

No good. :( Heard about this last night but just read the latest. 65 people dead and even the trademark church is down. I'm sure it will be rebuilt. We were all set to move down to Christ Church last year but the process hit a snag. Guess it's a good thing now?! Down under is not the place to be right now. Sorry guys!

Alot of people were saved from rubble overnite. Many are still waiting to be pulled out. Unfortunately, there are still regular aftershocks hindering the rescuers.

No word yet with our relatives there. My wife also has many relatives in QLD with the floods and cyclones. So the in-laws have got a hammering this year.

Any news on DMFers from NZ?

MonstaMan is the only one I can think of but he doesn't live by Christ Church.

Wow, you don't usually see that much damage from an EQ in developed countries.

The thing is that there was a 7.1? earthquake back in September last year that hit about 40km west of Christchurch which most certainly weakened building structures. The epicentre was also 10km underground.

This quake was much nearer Christchurch with the epicentre only 5km underground, which is relatively shallow, causing more damage.  :'(

I think he lives in Wanaka, which is 4 hours drive SW of Chrischurch. If I'm thinking of the same person? Was he the one with the modified MH900?

And its not like NZ is unused to earthquakes - they know what to do and how to build appropriately to withstand such events..... Imagine if it wasnt in a developed country how bad would it look.....

Mate, I hope they're going alright.  Communications are no doubt difficult, so its not necessarily bad that you've not heard.  It is a worry though.  Best wishes.

Should be fine then.  Wanaka - truly one of the most beautiful places on Earth to live.

Was able to speak with the relatives today.
Although their home was damaged (again), they are ok and the house is safe enough to live in. They are pretty used to it.
