Title: Gear in SoCal
Post by: awall41 on February 23, 2011, 07:55:31 PM
Where do you guys get your gear from? I checked Cycle Gear and the place was a joke.  Could just be the one by my house but the prices seemed high and the sales people seemed less than knowledgeable.

On another subject I finally have all the DMV paperwork for my license squared away and I'm ready to ride, maybe this weekend depending on the weather??  The bike only has 54 miles on it, its time to get riding.

I'd say check out the gear for sale section.
(on the left side of the screen, near the bottom)

I was able to pick up a one piece race suit in great condition for only $250 shipped from the eastcoast.  I've gotten stuff from CycleGear before, but I wait for a sale or coupons they send out.  I got a Dainese jacket for $78 on a New Years sale, plus a coupon, and a gift certificate!

--edit--

here ya go...

Cyclegear as far as knowledge is hit and miss, but when they have a deal they can be awesome. EXO-1000 helmets for $99 or Frank Thomas suits for $199.

How is the Frank Thomas gear? I have their gloves and like them but I have heard bad things on this forum.

where do you live?  that might help us point you somewhere.

And yeah.. going to cycle gear is like going to Fry's.  You need to know what you want because the sales staff is so hit or miss.  I avoid them and use my local family owned shop whenever possible.

Some people like Extreme Supply in Signal Hill. I go the A* parking lot sale once in a while but mostly I buy my stuff online. Hard to find stores that stock 34/36EU sizes.

Bert's Moto Mall in Azusa.  I have been there only once  (at their present location...I bought my first helmet from them when they were on Foothill back in 1978), but was impressed with the huge stock, and items on sale were comparable to online prices.

Bleh! Bert's does have a lot of stock, but good luck if you're ordering anything that is out of stock. I waited for a month and a half on a Phoenix Jacket order before just buying one somewhere else for cheaper when I started riding. I also hate weeding my way through their sales floor as the vultures hover and glare at you. Their standard prices are high but if you can find something on sale, you might get a deal. They do have a yearly clearance sale where you can get good deals, though. I usually only go there to try stuff on and then buy online because I don't like the dealership as a whole.

I got their XTi suit, not the most comfortable, but don't know if it just takes more breaking in, but quality seems legit and if I wreck it I'm not going to cry ( as bad) as if I would with a $1000+ suit.
