I was just talking with my wife the other day about getting a tank going again, probably doing salt water this time.
I'll get in touch with a friend of mine to get myself set up as he knows his shit with this stuff and has the most amazing set up I've seen.
He's got a 300 or so gallon tank with large lines running to the basement. He had the house built to accommodate the weight of the tank in that spot too.
The lines go down to a 55 gallon tank that has the water pass thru different filter media and also a converted dialysis machine (or something to that effect, it's been awhile) controls the salt content. the line going back up also has a bypass with a control valve on it. The bypass runs thru on of his AC ducts and acts as a controlled heat exchanger and helps keep the tank cooled if needed.
In the tank itself, some device at the top makes waves and between that and the lighting, it mimics the daylight/nighttime cycles and even does an occasion storm.
My favorite thing he has in the tank is this evil shrimp that will attack anything that comes near it.  [laugh]

Obviously I won't go as complex (or expensive) as he did but I'd like to get something going again.

OK, now I'm bummed - my 55 gallon saltwater tank is a bowfront, and sorta hard to get a good clear shot of. The few pics I have are apparently years old judging by the coral growth.

There's lots more going on in there now. I'll have to try again later when the lights are on.  [thumbsup]

between his and my heavy workload and the fact he lives about 100 miles away we never get together but when we next do, I'll be sure to take pictures.
I'm sure he wouldn't mind me bragging on his behalf.  [thumbsup]

I, too, would love to see the evil shrimp.

For I have had several, and none could be described as evil. I can't even imagine - short of one having "lasers" attached.

Nice!  great setup!  I've got a 1200 or so gallon pond in the backyard.  No fish, but plenty of tadpoles & frogs!

FYI, I bought all my stuff off of craigslist.  Tank is 75 and the sump below is 30 gals that set us back 200 bucks, another 200 for a LOT of rocks and assorted corals, but all in all, we spent about 1200 dollars to get up and running.

From my years of saltwater, let the coral set for 30 or more days before introducing a (a) fish. Another 30 before fish 2 etc., it will pay off in the end. Coral only tanks are cool as well.  ;D

About all I do anymore is clean filters weekly and change out some water to replenish nutrients every other week. Water quality is spot-on.

Ya, that's what we did actually.  The fish that came with the corals and rocks where hardy as goldfish.  The two tangs where added a year later.  It sucks spending 45 dollars on livestock to just have them die :(

I did trim work on a house a couple years ago that had a 4000 gal saltwater aquarium as one of the interior walls. Wish I had pics, but we had to sign non-disclosure agreements just to get on the property.

I set up a 200 gallon saltwater tank in a former workplace, and I thought that was cool.

4000 gallons? You could go scuba diving in there....  [evil]

Nice setup!  [thumbsup]

Used to have a big pseudochromis in mine, but he cashed in around the five year mark.  :(

My tank turned eight in September, and other than the pseudochromis and one yellowtail damsel (I think a tube anemone I had got him), I still have all my original fish.

I'd like another anemone, first one died and turned himself inside out, and they can fowl the entire tank.  I'm now scared of the buggers.

Mine died over the course of a couple days. I knew what to expect, so it got pulled before it could wreak complete havoc.
