Title: Can we separate the old and new monsters?
Post by: xplodee on February 28, 2011, 10:57:05 AM
I'm sure this may not be a popular request, but who knows.

Would it be possible to separate the 696/796/1100 versus older monsters out of forums like accessories/mods so that people with old and new monsters can talk amongst themselves better?

Accessories/Mods
-Older Monsters
-New (696/796/1100) Monsters

To put it simply...

NO.

That would be divisive...and this place is not about that.

I understand the temptation, but as a relative casual board user and not a Flounder, I agree with DP.

Besides the potential for divisiveness, there are practical issues as well:

- people change bikes, and may remember there was an interesting post on a bike they now own that they want to go back and read. They may also be able to answer a question based on expertise with a bike they no longer own.

- many things apply equally well to all models, to all Ducatis, or even to all motorcycles. If those aren't posted in multiple places, some people for whom they may be highly appropriate will miss them.

- older Monsters went through several iterations, and even though they look much alike there are significant differences over the years. It would be impractical to separate out models based on different swingarms, for example. I see as many similarities between my old 2005 620 and 2009 696 (fuel injection, electronic dash) as between my 620 and an early model carbed Monster.

- although specifics may differ, many accessory or mod posts would still be useful to someone with a different bike. One simple example would be CRG levers: the model numbers are different, but everything else about them would apply across the range of models. Another example would be that great new seat someone got for their 1100. While it obviously wouldn't fit a 620, the manufacturer might make one that would so the post could still be useful for a rider with a different bike.

- some members don't have a Monster at all, or even a bike, yet still enjoy reading posts, including accessory or mod posts, that don't much apply to them.

Why not just put information about whatever it is about a bike that makes a post apply only to certain models right in the thread title? That way people who want to read about old-style taillight lenses but not new-style ones can make that choice while the taillight fanatics can read all of them.

I don't even have a Monster any longer, but this is still one of my favorite places on the 'net. That includes the Tech and Accessories & Mods sections.

Plus it'd be a total pain in the dick to have to go through and categorize all 81 pages of Mods and Accessories posts.

Just sayin.
