I happened to be glancing through a couple of manuals and noticed the orientation of the front sprocket facing a different direction in the illustrations of two different model monsters. I was under the assumption flat side away from the engine when dealing with a sprocket retaining plate. For review:

M695
Is the 695 manual correctly stating the direction of the sprocket? Or is it based on chain alignment?
The 695 manual is correct, the flat side goes inboard.
Same with the old M800. It came with a narrow rear wheel.
Thanks for the replies!
Yep, I put a wider wheel on my M695 and flipped the sprocket to maintain perfect chain alignment.
