Title: The search for a track bike has come to an end.
Post by: Grampa on March 03, 2011, 09:35:13 PM
As predicted....do a track day/class..and you'll be addicted ;D

So far I've done three.... two at Streets of Willow and one at Laguna Seca.

Streets is about 45 min away for Bako, and I love the tight twistiness of it. It's not a horsepower track, so taking the 1098 there was a lil overkill.

So for the past few months Ive been searching for an inexpensive 600cc-ish bike. I had my hands on an 06 GSXR that was allready set up perfect as a track only bike as it was a friends race bike. When it came time to exchange cash for bike.... the deal  fell apart when the state DMV fees/fines for him not having registered it since 2007 pushed the sale price far beyond what I wanted to spend.

So after some drunkled think'n..... I decided to venture down another track bike path.

hmmmmmm tight twisty track close to home... hmmmm.... I know..... SUPERMOTO [moto] [laugh]

so today I added to my carbon footprint 8)

2006 Suzuki RMZ4fiddy

I ordered steel braded brake lines, a supermoto front fender, some Warp9 supermoto rims and a set of slicks this afternoon [evil]

I got it from one of the kids I work with. The front forks cost more than I paid for the bike, plus I got an spare/new clutch, two extra sets of plastics, extra graphics and a gripper seat cover.....SCORE  ;D

What size rims and tires?

You may need different triples...

That front brake may get crispy too.

17x3.5 front. ,17x4.25 rear

That front brake will get crispy too.

Fixed it for you.

A co-worker rides one of these in AMA supermoto and from his experience I can tell you that if you don't upgrade that front brake it will catch on fire / etc.

Other than that, congrats! You Mo-Tarded now!  [thumbsup]

congrats....now...pardon my ignorance for a sec, but what is the diffference or advantage of an RM-Z over a DR-Z? (other than the extra 49 cc's)

I guess you'll be spending some time on supermotojunkie.com and thumpertalk.com now as well as here then!

No front brake needed...... I plan on backing it in everywhere  [laugh]

Dmz is the dual sport

Rmz is the motocross version and is not steet legal.

I thought about selling the dirt rims and tires, but I think i'll keep them so I can play in the dirt too.

You'll have balls of fun with the motard style racing for sure. I have question about the Gixxer 600. If it was to be used as a track only bike why would DMV have to be involved? Wouldn't a simple bill of sale and whatever paperwork existed be sufficient to go race?

Title: Re: The search for a track bike has come to an end.
Post by: Grampa on March 05, 2011, 03:15:18 PM
The guy I was getting it from.... bought it as a salvaged new bike in 07 and never transfered the bike into his name..... he just prepped it for the track and went racing. The dmv wanted me to pay all the back fees just to put it into my name. Every so often they check vins at the track to check for stolen bikes and I wanted everything on my end to be legal.

Sweet, have fun!

FYI re the DRZ vs RMZ, they are completely different bikes.  The RMZ is build ground-up to win MX races and is competitive on a national level in stock form. The DRZ makes slightly over half the power, revs much more slowly, much more basic suspension and chassis and weighs about 65lbs more. Its made to be a mild-mannered, low maintenance trail bike.  Both great machines, just really different.

If you've never ridden a 450cc MX bike its something to experience.  The power is downright violent. About the same hp as a monster 620, but weighs just over 200lbs, has very little flywheel weight and instant throttle response.  I can't go WOT in the first two gears on my CRF450R without looping :)

still waiting on rims :(

installed MSR hand guards today.... which meant I had to ditch the cool protaper aluminum roller bearing throttle tube and replace it with a standard motion pro tube...which meant I also had to replace the grips too. new protaper pillowtop grips and motion pro doughnuts. I brought the tires home while I wait on the rims, so as therapeutic relife(I had a crappy yesterday and morning)... I painted the lettering in the tires ;D

I also installed the rear steelbraided brakeline today.

My axle sliders arrived today.... but I'm waiting for the tires to be mounted before I put those on.

Friday, I plan on changing the oil and draining the coolant. I figure I'll use the redline waterwetter for the track.

My two piece suit happens to be a supermoto suit I got a few years ago.... so I got a pair of Fox comp5 boots to go with it.

If I can get my suspension set up and get my rims in.... I hope to hit the the track nex week [moto]

I just need to replace the front brakes, bleed both front and rear brakes again, drain coolant and add watter wetter, then have our local SM guru tweek my suspension and she'a fini.

Took her out for her first test run this morning.

Thanks to Cali's failed housing market....there is an abandoned housing tract with fresh asphalt nearby [evil]

I need to tinker with the gearing a lil, but that may wait until I see what the cart track dictates.

Riding in dirt boots and the upright riding position is going to take a bit of getting used to.

Slicks....... ARE F'N FUUUUUUN. instant grip [evil] I cant wait to try them out on an actual track.

Getting on the gas while leaving a corner and having the front end lift while the back end stays planted is a hoot.

I need to have a friend check the torque on the rear spokes (to allow for seating the spoke correctly), and as soon as thats done...... track day ahoy!

I finally got her out on the track today.

I had the whole track to myself  ;D

Buttonwillow Raceway had a cart track to the north of the main track, and for $50.00 bucks you can practice on it from 7am to 5pm. If others are there, you alternate from carts to super motos every 1/2 hour. Today....I was a loner [evil]

I ran it clockwise in this configuration all morning.

I lowsided at Zolder about 10 laps in. No damage done to me or the bike... I just picked her up a took off again [laugh]. Around ten more laps later I stopped back at the truck to check the bike out and was surprised to find the rear tire hot and the front tire just barely warm. Every so often I'd pit and drop a lil tire pressure which appeared to make a difference in front end grip. One of our customers races super motos and has offered to help me dial the suspension in, so I'm hoping that will help generate some more front end confidence. Once the suspension is tweeked just right, I'll swap out the rear sprocket, go down a few teeth and take her to a bigger short course. I ran pretty much non stop from 8 am to 12 with just a few breaks..... and I'm beat ;D

The best thing about this is the cost.... had I gone down like I did on the monster or the 1098... it would have cost me a bunch in parts to make the bike right. On the RMZ..... I just got back on and smiled a big fat smile in my helmet ;D

I was out there on my YSR50 mixing it up with the 450SM's one day.  It was pretty hairy!  :o

They were totally cool, though and only passed us on the straights, or the outside.

It's pretty crazy to have your knee on the ground, both ends wiggling around, and have a guy come around you all crossed up, boiling the rear tire!  [laugh]  Fun times!  [moto]

Curious how it's going so far....I'm really wanting to get some track time/school/instruction....but I'm not financially ready to make the "dedicated" track bike buy.

Since I can't afford to rebuild my monster if I throw it down (and don't believe in reporting a track crash to insurance), I have no choice but something less $$$.

I'd need about 600$ including the tires to make the katoom track worthy, but I'm concerned that it's not going to have enough top-end to get down the straights.  I'm not looking to go warp 9, but I don't think buzzing the thing at redline for a minute each lap will be good for the motor.

CMP is where I would run it....do you find the DRZ sitting on the limiter for ever to get to the next corner?

Thoughts?

Weather permitting .... I should be taking her to streets of willow on monday. I took a few few teeth off the rear so as to help out a lil on the short straights. On the cart track...its a blast to ride.

I highly suggest everybody get a supermoto. Mostest cheapest funest bike you'll ever ride.

Yesterday I finally sacked up and ran in the "A" group and fully expected to have my ass handed to me by be'n passed a shitload. It didn't happen. I think I got passed maybe 12 time all day ;D

On the third session out I took turn 11 a lil wider than I should of, and thanks to a lil too much lean angle and choppy asphalt..... I lowsided  :o
For a split second I actually thought I could save it on a knee  [laugh]
As soon as I stopped sliding a ran over to the bike which was still running....and on fire. Hot engine+fuel over flow+dry grass= fire), I hit the kill switch, picked the bike up and moved it away from the fire. Rode back to the pits and all that I had to do was reset he clutchside bar protector and she was ready to go back out.

Later in the afternoon I introduced myself to Will from RetroSBK and he says... "you should bring the Ducati out here to run".... my response was.... I'm actually faster out here on Streets on the RMZ than on the 1098, and if I had gone down on the 1098 like I did today.... that's a couple of grand in repairs. (as a side note, Will's Streefighter is baaaaaaad assed)
