Title: Can I save the caliper?
Post by: slowkitty on March 08, 2011, 01:57:29 AM
Trying to re-condition a set of calipers off a 2002 monster,

... and turned out that one of them the inner piston holders had a leak.  Can these be repaired by welding etc or should i just take a replacement? These calipers are pretty common, shared by older monsters and guzzis.

Anyone has a road-rashed caliper for cheap sale? I only need a good-condition inner half i.e. not the half with the "Brembo" word.

Cheers

I would just pick up another one.  As you said yourself, they are plentiful and can usually be had for fairly cheap.

Cast aluminum can be welded, but this is a brake caliper. I wouldn't trust my life to it.

I was told by Yoyodyne that these calipers were not rebuildable, but I'm going to contact Ducati or Brembo to make sure. I'm having a hard time accepting that these calipers are to be discarded and no one sells rebuild kits.

you can source the seals from o ring companies but you need OPDM seals not normal runner

It may be that the rebuild parts are just not sold in the US.

That is the case with many brake related items here due to the ridiculous amount of frivolous litigation.

Here's a link in a recent thread on a supplier of rebuild kits:

Alright, back from my trip.

I am in the market for the back half of a caliper, so one with a road-rashed front-facing side is fine.  Will consider complete units depending on price, of course.

Will appreciate  offers to my PM, with your email (for pic purposes)  and price with shipping to Chicago.

Cheers

Alas, it's KTM part #58713021000 for pistons and seals. The 2000-2002 Duke II uses the same 2-pin Goldline axials and KTM doesn't mind selling a rebuild kit. Not sure if the o-ring joining the caliper halves is included but it could be sourced from a metric o-ring supplier somewhere.
I knew there had to be a way...
