Title: California Pipes Law Post by: Fergus on March 10, 2011, 11:13:36 PM I'm thinking about taking a roadtrip to California this summer, but I've seen a couple of comments about a law relating to aftermarket exhausts. Will I get busted with my loud-ass pipes?
Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: kopfjäger on March 10, 2011, 11:20:51 PM I don'tive in Pinkoville, but I would guess unless you are being overly obnoxious, you will be fine.
Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: monster monkey on March 10, 2011, 11:44:45 PM Overall, no problems but.............in certain areas (i.e. nicer cities with few bikes or too many) it could be an issue but i wouldn't worry about it [thumbsup]
Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: Howie on March 11, 2011, 02:52:31 AM The law will only affect 2013 model year and newer bikes. I guess the Oakland police will be keeping their bikes a little longer

Unless you go to rider-heavy areas where they're also doing targeted enforcement. There are a couple of places in Northern California I don't generally ride during the summer months.
Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: gregrnel on March 11, 2011, 07:10:35 AM I'd love a law that just took out straight pipers, like target practice!
Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: SacDuc on March 11, 2011, 08:08:12 AM If that was a problem Bacon Junkie and I would have had the CHP descending on us from all over the county last weekend. [evil]
Don't be skerd. sac Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: Fergus on March 11, 2011, 09:33:33 AM Cool, thanks guys. It's always nice for an expat to get back to the motherland...

By the way, when ya coming? Will you be out here for DIMBY? [evil] [bacon] Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: Drunken Monkey on March 11, 2011, 02:23:44 PM I don'tive in Pinkoville, but I would guess unless you are being overly obnoxious, you will be fine. I live near the rainbow colored heart of Pinkoville [roll] and I've never had any issues even with the uber-loud contis on my bike. The new law is only for newer bikes, and as far as the existing laws they are only targeting straight-pipe Harleys in heavily populated (read as: Touristed) areas. Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: JEFF_H on March 11, 2011, 02:36:15 PM The only place in CA that will definitely kick you out for loud pipes is the racetrack at Laguna Seca [roll]

I'll be heading for Santa Maria - sister lives there. I'm coming from Utah.
Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: danaid on March 11, 2011, 05:10:04 PM The nice areas along the coast where the rich people live [wine] (Monterrey, Newport beach, etc..). My brother-in-law lives in Huntington beach who rides, and says the highways and hills are heavily policed and tickets are frequently given for all loud exhausts. There are noise level laws already in place.

Your bro-in-law is exaggerating. Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: redxblack on March 12, 2011, 08:54:55 AM Or he's INCREDIBLY unlucky. heh.
Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: The Bacon Junkie on March 12, 2011, 11:45:07 AM I haven't decided when, but I probably won't make the DIMBY. I'll be heading for Santa Maria - sister lives there. I'm coming from Utah. Santa Maria is only about 75 miles from Santa Barbara... Just say'n... ;) Unless you want to ride one of the most fantastic roads in California, then it will take longer. Take the 166 East out of Santa Maria. Then turn right at the 166/33 junction and head south on the 33 towards Ojai. As you pass Lockwood Valley Rd. and the Ranger Station/Fire Camp, get ready for 30+ miles of amazing twistyphonic happiness. [moto] As you get into Ojai, fill up at the 76. Then turn right and head West on the 150/33. Continue on the twisty 150West until you hit the 101. North on the 101 into Santa Barbara. That will take you a few hours more... :D The 33 (http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp231/tazios/Motos%20Photos/photo-75.jpg) (http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp231/tazios/photo-70.jpg) (http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp231/tazios/Motos%20Photos/photo-79.jpg) In case you needed some incentive... [evil] [bacon] I grew up in SM and didn't know about this. I'll have to map it out. I've been east on 166 several times, on my way to College in Ut years ago, but that was in a cage and I hated the section between when you break out of the coastal range and Arvin. There's a lot of great roads out there. -Ferg Title: Re: California Pipes Law Post by: The Bacon Junkie on March 12, 2011, 01:31:25 PM Yeah, that long, interminably straight section of the 166 before the 33 sucks. Once you get on the 33, there's another 4-5 miles of pin straight road before it gets really interesting! [evil]
