Title: Hello all, noob (to monsters) in NoVA/DC here
Post by: bikepilot on March 12, 2011, 01:41:14 PM
Hi everyone,

I have a general intro thread in the intro section and was directed here, so here I am :)

I live in Annandale, work at 17th & K.  I usually ride a little DR250SE to work. I also have an assortment of dirt bikes and a TL1000S.

I just bought a Monster 620 for my wife that's in need of a little TLC so I'll be poking around here for tech info [thumbsup]

One the I forgot to mention in your intro thread was the belts. If the cam belts are original they will need to be replaced. They spec on them is 12k miles or 2 years of age for replacement.

Thanks, I'm not sure if they are original or not.  I just went through the receipts for service and didn't see belts listed, but it looks like he only saved receipts from when work other than standard servicing was done.  I was planning on doing them very soon to be on the safe side. I'd also kinda like to add some blingy belt covers - any recommendations?

SpeedyMoto or Rizoma seem to be the default go to choices...

Also depends on how much you want to spend on them. If you want something cheap you can get some decent Carbon Fiber ones on eBay. Or even do some cool mod on the ones already on the bike, like slots or clear covers. [thumbsup]

Sounds like some good options, thanks!

Yeah look around on the site there's a few options. Cheapest and easiest is a hit from the old rattle can. But folks have taken stock ones, cut various windows and inserted plex or wire mesh or etc etc

Shift-tech makes some nice carbon fiber ones. And then there's Bens mentions of Speedy- moto and Rizoma. But those are billet based. The speedy-moto ones just cover the pullys and leave the belts exposed. The rizoma ones a shaped like the factory ones, by have significant cut outs with plex windows. There's been one or two horror stories from folks with open belt covers, that have the misfortune of tossing a belt to a foreign object getting sucked into the works. So if you're the paranoid type, then some sort of full coverage ones will be best.

PJsParts.com is the best source for Rizoma goodies in the US

Oh Hai - I'm at 18 & K...where have you found to park down here?

Cool, what building?  I'm in the Wiley Rein building (1776).  We should grab lunch sometime.  I usually park at Conn. and M as there's free parking there then walk the few blocks over to the office.  I've heard through the grape vine that some folks have cut deals with the parking garages under the buildings here, but their official stance varies from no bikes at all to charging bikes full cage-price.

Incidentally, anyone here know if I need longer brake lines to fit Renthal road high bars to the '06 M620?  I've read that the bend is about the same as the Monster City bars.  I posted a thread here http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=47182.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=47182.0) but haven't gotten a lot of discussion yet.  If I do need longer brake lines, any suggestions on where to get them?

when I changed to Pro-Taper ATV High Bars on both my old street monster ( before that pregnant dog got it) and on the Gran Canyon, I was able to use the stock lines....but it was a stretch on the Gran Canyon....as far as where to get lines...the best place IMHO is Spiegler www.spieglerusa.com/ (//http://)  ....best thing to do is to unbolt the 4 bolts of the clamp on the top triple and raise up the bar to roughly where the new bars will be to see about how close you might be in terms of that limitation of stretch.

I'm at 1801. I used to be able to park on the sidewalk at the back of the building for $5 but then they "updated" the building, supposedly making it greener and took out all the motorcycle parking. I can still park here but it's full cage price. I quite riding to work since it was faster to metro in and the cost was the same.  One of my coworkers was telling me that she had seen motorcycle parking around M but couldn't remember exactly where - you're probably parking where she's talking about.  May have to check that out (free is always good)!

I would be less bitter if the bike had made it to the west coast 2.5 years ago when she had a job and the ability to have taken care of it...but it has since sat lingering in a state of care where it is far from being the bike it was or could still be and THAT pisses me off just a bit...

Thanks Zooom, I'll play with it tomorrow.

dolci, we'll have to grab lunch sometime  [thumbsup]

If you look at google street view of M street just off Conn. you'll see the bikes parked (the google cage went by summer '09  and took my pic at a different intersection  [laugh])
