Title: s4r exhaust/fav mod ideas
Post by: uglyducky on March 12, 2011, 07:42:03 PM
hey guys,
so looks like the m900 is gonna be gone this week  :'( so i'll now be wasting a bunch of  [bacon] on the S4R.  i bought it with full arrow cf system AND LOOOOOVE the sound but am not a fan of the look.  any experience with boomtubes or other interesting exhaust ideas?  also, what are your favorite s4r mods?  this thing has more power than a chump like me will ever need with a power commander and an engine that about 800cc's too big for me.  soooooo, thinkin more along the aesthetics line.  kinda wonderin how a retro lookin s4r would play out . . . anywho.  any cool exhaust ideas or mods that you guys have dug on your own rides i'd love to see/hear about.  she is below in all her glory:

Moto Creations are not currently producing boom tubes for the 06 and under called these guys to see if they'd do an exhaust for an S4R  ;D - we'll see . . . meanwhile if anyone wants to trade for the full arrow system  [coffee] or perhaps i can get these guys to make me something. ..

or you could do what I did and swap an undertail exhaust from an S2R 800 or 1000 by Termi or Zard and buy a Marvin mid-pipe.  My old S2R and my current S4R

Two words, gold wheels.  ;)

Those shorty Termi's are nice. If was looking for exhaust, they would be near the top of the list.

problem is i no longer have stock exhaust and therefore, no udder.  i do however have an email from double dog (the pic above on the streetfighter) stating that they will make me a one off system.  just waiting to hear about the cost . . . . [puke]  i imagine it's gonna sting.  but i heard one of those systems on a buddy's streetfighter and it sounds like a pissed off dragon in a fist fight.  i loved it.

kinda wonderin how a retro lookin s4r would play out . . .
IMO the water cooled motors dont lend themselves to the stripped down retro look.

The S4R is one of the few naked bikes that looks better with a bit of bodywork on it, Ive always wanted to get an s4r and hack up some 999 bodywork into a sort of half fairing in conjunction with a monza bellypan and some CF engine bling.  sort of a cafe evo idea that would play off of the similarities in the engine between the S4R and 999.

edit: like this but with a 999 upper that would be a bit larger (come down lower and come back further)

Congrats on the S4R,

My 06 final edition was still one of the best bikes I ever owned, so you are in for a world of fun.

Now onto mods... the best mods I ever did to my S4R were adding a Bitubo damper and an EVR slipper clutch.

I did actually have the carbon arrow full system like yours does, and while it was great, you are correct that it has a few drawbacks (it will smoke out your right rear turn signal for one).

Which one would I put on it instead? Tough call, I'm going in a custom Arrow header/Comp Werkes cannister direction with the new S4RS, but the double dog exhaust is totally wicked cool, and something we will definitely have to ask them to produce for the S4R and the S4RS series.

Good luck on the build!  [thumbsup]

Not too sure about that, it was a custom job, but could easily be duplicated.

Well I'm not a fan of any water cooled monster, but I think that is pretty slick. I hate water cooled Monsters, because it goes against the whole naked bike theme.  ;)

I WILL one day own a monoposto bike and it WILL have one of those DoubleDog moto cans.  Until then, I fear for the comfort of my passenger.  Namely, the ability of their right boot NOT to catch on fire.

I like that one off Termi kit, but it looks like one of the DDMoto's, but without the finishing touches.  Just kinda, "make the beast with two backs it, let's put the can there".

This bike has more than enough power for the street, so all my favorite mods have been cosmetic:
colored swingarm to match frame;
hide/re-route wires (esp. starter/solenoid);
re-route fuel lines;
low-slung exhaust;
lower headlight/gauges (especially if you have clip-ons);
airbox removal;
replace radiator overflow bottle w/smaller unit;
anodize fork tubes;
remove cast lines from lower triple and match lower triple to upper (color);
smaller/black radiator;
wheel color something/anything other than black (my bike's were white from the factory).

Several of these mods make the bike more "see through," which I think is cool.

I have and 04' S4R and I love the look of the Zard CF undertail exhaust.  I currently have some Silmotor Titamnium or SS w/e full system and dont care for the look of it much.  Sounds great but I will get the Zards ASAP financially.

Anyone looking to trade hint, hint.

three questions
1. what kind of clip ons and are they above or below triple (hard to make out in pic)
2. where the HELL did you get those belt covers
3. wanna trade exhausts?   ;D [coffee]  - i would be willing to do that for you.  you seem like a nice guy

1. Cycle Cat.  They mount on top of the triple.
2. The belt covers are by Rizoma, and I think they're still available.  I bought my set off a board member who had them powdercoated gloss black.  I really like seeing the cam pulleys.
3.  :D  This is my fifth exhaust: stock, Termi shotguns/Spareshack header, stock udder, ExBox, Boom Tubes.   [laugh]  The Boom Tubes are nice.  Maybe a set will pop-up for sale, and you can snag them.

Do you have any baffles on that exhaust?

Title: Re: s4r exhaust/fav mod ideas
Post by: cafeducati on March 19, 2011, 10:15:54 PM
I sure do.

They are metal internal baffles that I put in myself to create some resemblence of back pressure.

The exhaust started out as a Carby Arrow Full Syst.  I was utterly irritated that the exhaust had to be partly removed to take the rear tire off.   So I created what I thought was a compliment to the cafe' theme I was shooting for.

The baffles are directly under the foot peg.   They are in the middle segment of the exhaust, the last few inches of straight pipe.  Some bending, cutting of the baffles had to be done.

She actually has no airbox as well.  If you look through the trellis, you can see the forward pod filter.

I lost top end (which is not exactly significant in the first place) for a 10 bhp boost in midrange.  This is all with a custom map for the PC III usb from DUCSEA.

This pic is right before packing her up for the 2010 USGP in Monterey.

I must say that if you have not tasted clipons on the Monster Series of bikes, it is like having a shot of vodka with every meal.   Very nice, great feeling, but after excess, it kinda hurts.

I wouldn't ever go back to the high bar.   I love it.

Three that I know of currently.

MOTOCORSA TRACKDAY AUG 2010 PATRICK WAVE.wmv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cUSVEq8Bn8#normal)
(848s and a handful of 1098s and 1198s)

MOTOCORSA TRACKDAY AUG 2010 PASTA EATERS.wmv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRPtJsHsh5g#normal)
(MV F4 1000 on the right in the first couple of seconds, Desmosidicci on the left as I give chase, handful of 1198s)

MOTOCORSA TRACKDAY AUG 2010     1.wmv (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgtftgi661g#normal)
(only the music from the Desmoquattro, yes, that is a second D16RR)

Enjoy.   There is a vid that will be uploaded from Mt St Helens soon.  It is from 2009 though.

@cafeducati - when the directions said to mount your clip-ons below the triple clamp, they meant the top triple clamp.   ;D

Jeebus they're low!!!

Title: Re: s4r exhaust/fav mod ideas
Post by: cafeducati on March 20, 2011, 09:43:26 AM
Heath, the exhaust was thermal coated and then cut with a dremel using a fiber blade.  In hindsight, the coating should have happened AFTER the cutting.  What was I thinking.

LOL, thank you DucHead.  I ride her long distance like that, and it pains in between the shoulder blades and neck, but it is worth it.

Clipons 1-2 inches up might be wisest, but I do not want to change mine, I adore the dedicated position.

The pegs touch on the track, so that needs to be addressed.

I think he means that your exhaust prevents wheel removal, so the cans (and maybe the link pipes) must be removed first.  That's how my Termis were.

Yes, that is what I meant.  I should have expanded on the question a little more.

I love the look of the Arrows, but it frustrates me to be forced to remove part of the exhaust system to get to a single sided swingarm that facilitates a 28 second rear tire/rim removal.

What options are you looking at for your S4R?
What exhuasts are you considering?

The Quat Exbox is a fine item.

ahhh, roger that.  no, i have not.  speeddog is in the process of masterminding and fabricating a custom exhaust setup for me since double dog, moto creations, and xbox are all out of the s4r game.  so, we're goin backyard custom with valley ducati!!!  should be sweet.  nick is a lunatic.

That

They are just crazy nakid superbikes with zero rise clipons.  After doing that and the rearsets on mine I  feel like I am riding a sofa when on a 1098....such a relaxed riding position.

I highly recommend the Sato rearsets...very nice.  Super high though.  The plus side is I have only scrubbed my riding boots once since installing them!!!

+1 for crazy aggressive riding position on Monsters! [beer]

That bike is cafeducati 's bike.  He posted some track videos after I asked if he had a sound clip. [in this thread]

Seems like it was the gas.  Until I get the new battery in, I won't be able to verify it.

In the 10 mins it spent idling, no-load revving the motor went from popping/struggling to get above 5k to zinging up and down like it used to.  Hopefully under load it she will be her old self again.

good, i hope it's cheap and easy.  nothing more frustrating than staring at a beautiful bike that's not acting right.
