Ok, so I'm just looking for some thoughts as I already have several ideas of what the problem is, but just hate going through the trouble of draining the oil and pulling the cover. Basically i'm just being lazy about it.
2000 m750
in any case, the noise sounds like the end of the crank is scratching the crank cover intermittently, only at idle speeds. Obviously that's not what's really happening since the end of the crank has a significant amount of room before reaching the cover, but I was thinking maybe the case cover bearing that the crank sits in is bad? The noise is very localized in that area and I have no discernable engine performance loss or excess vibrations.
the only change that could have affected this area is that I replaced half the old clutch plates with new barnett wet clutch plates.
any thoughts as to what this could be before I go and get a new bearing and pull the cover?
any help is greatly appreciated!
cant help you on the noise, but if you get something soft and lean your bike over to the right against a wall ( i put it against an old mattress) you can remove the left side cover without losing a drop of oil.
I'd look at the bearing in the cover.
My 750 SS lost the left main bearing. Never did figure out if it was just a bad bearing or another problem

thanks for the sanity check N!
Ok, took a while (a long while), but I finally got around to changing the left side case bearing that holds the end of the crank (it's a standard 6003 bearing in case you were wondering), and no dice. I still have the noise like the end of the crank is hitting the crank cover. I went ahead and changed the timing belt bearings too even though it was really pretty unrelated (6201-RS bearings in case you were wondering, plus Ducati specific ones for the stationary bearings, part 45120211A if you need it) and no change.
I'm at a bit of a loss as to what could be happening. I'm almost thinking the clutch side of things may be loose or something and the noise is translating down the crank or something like that... Anyone ever seen or experience this before?
of course, diagnosing noises is tough on the internets, but that's where I'm at for the moment. Thanks!
Just to close the loop on this one, I opened up the case cover again two nights ago and still couldn't find anything amiss.
Although it took a bit of force, the stator could be moved a mm or two either rotational direction. The bolts were tight and yet it was still doing that. So I put a few small washer under the bolt heads and retightened the stator. After I put the washers in, the stator would not move and after a short idle run, I couldn't hear the noise any longer. Haven't done a ride yet, but I'm fairly certain that was the source of the noise. It wasn't enough movement to cause any metal to metal contact (plus it wasn't moving in a linear plane), but enough to cause that noise right on the left side cover. Hopefully I've got this one licked! [Dolph]
Let us know when you get her back out on the road...hopefully that did the trick!
Rode to work this morning and no noise! [thumbsup]
