Title: Any good Destination rides in VA?
Post by: Narflar on March 19, 2011, 08:59:30 AM
Anyone know of a good spot in VA to ride to?  My normal cafe spot in Goochland closed down so now I'm looking for a new spot.  That was a nice ride through some twisty back roads from Richmond.  Now I don't have a spot to ride to and I've never been good at just going for a ride.  I like to go ride out for lunch or something on the weekend and then find my way home.

Since I'm coming out of Richmond NOVA and DC area are a bit out of reach for me for a casual weekend ride.  Looking for stuff a bit south.  I was thinking Fredericksburg but there aren't any interesting roads between Richmond and Fredericksburg.

Any ideas?

Have you checked out the Richmond thread?

And, a little ways down the road, the Hampton Roads thread:

Destination rides are subjective but, in general, folks head west into/over the mountains (avoid weekends and holidays).

I live down here in Stafford.  As far as a destination..not sure, but Joplin Rd isn't bad and the roads around the backside of Qunatico on the TBS or west of the 95 are ok.

Pretty much any backroad in Augusta/Highland/Albemarle/Nelson/Rockingham county should do the trick. Basically anything west of Zion X-Roads. There are some seriously kick ass roads in the Staunton/Harrisonburg area (that's where I'm from).

Too funny, I just drove through Bath, Augusta and Rockingham counties today on my way back from my fish camp.  TONs o mid cowfield Sweepers!  Great mountain roads......lots of state boys lurking though.....

Nice, I'll check that out.  It's about an hour out from Richmond and that's part of the problem.  I got a few back country roads I frequent but all the real fun stuff is at least an hour out via freeway.

From West Point try going north on Rt. 14, when you reach US360 go straight across, country store/gas station on the left at this intersection, you are now on Rt. 721 follow that up to US 301, or turn right when your reach Rt. 630 (Sparta Road) then right on Rt. 625 back to Rt. 721. Not sure how far you want to go north but those set of roads are nice little ride. PM me if you want more. - Gene

and that man KNOWS some roads...and he is not often one to post or share those routes, at least not publicly!

Gene- is there a road in VA that you don't know?...

I'm sure there are quite a few roads I don't know in Va but I know enough good ones to keep me entertained for at least 4-5 Solid 400+ days without ever leaving Va or getting on an Interstate, same for WV, maybe a day or two in MD, at least 2 days in SE  Ohio, and days in NC and TN - still learning that area.

Narflar there are several places in Bowling Green to grab some lunch. Main Street Cafe, Jack's(Thai) And if you want to go farther let me know. - Gene

Possible, but then they probably aren't worth knowing.

There's also the "Favorite Stretches of Road" thread:

I suppose we got shy about sharing (for legitimate reasons). Gosh, I remember when I started riding full-time on the street (way back in '09) and I wanted to know about every awesome ride out there. Got frustrated and decided to go find the roads myself. It was dark when I left the house and it was dark when I got home. Those were the days...

And when will this mythical "next bike" materialize?  It's nigh time, don't you think?

I know I've cried wolf a few times since IMS but I'm finishing up a moonlighting gig that required much more effort than expected. I've not had the time to keep up with this (or any) forum, let alone ride. So, as it stands right now, I'm going to get serious around mid-May.

The bad new is I'm probably going to do a follow-on project with these guys, as it could lead to something big. Not sure I'll be able to clock the miles I did the past few years. The withdrawal is killing me, though...
