Title: Automotive Oil vs Motorcycle Oil
Post by: erkishhorde on March 24, 2011, 05:27:55 PM
NjineerMike posted this on another forum. Thought he'd post it here but I did a screen name search and didn't find him.  ???

I think I remember some posts about people recently changing oil on wet clutch monsters and getting slip because they put in "wrong" oil but I don't pay much attention to wet clutch threads.  [roll]

I wish they would do a newer version of that oil test.
That's a pretty old test, from way back.

And now with car oils needing to be able to deal with engines that shear oil down as aggressively as motorcycles do, and also fuel dilution from Direct Injection engines, I bet the automotive oils are better now for bikes than they were previously.

And there are a lot more oils aimed at European auto engines that have to deal with this on the market today than back then. It could be interesting, to see the results.

BC.

short and simple... motorcycle oil = car oil without energy conserving/friction modifiers.  friction modifiers make your clutch slip.

find oil that doesnt have friction modifiers and you wont have your clutch slip.  you'll know if the oil has the EC stuff because you'll see this on the back:

and for any other info... read the thread stickied to the top of the forum.

i know there are huge threads about this topic and they might have even linked this same test, but the only question in my mind still is if the friction reducing additives in the automotive oils actually harm your wet clutch?   if the answer is yes, then the automotive oils are still not acceptable in my wet clutch bike, despite being able to maintain better viscosity over time.  right?

coz i have cases of royal purple sitting around that i'd love to put in my bike if the clutch wasn't going to be effected...

Quite old.  US car oils have gone through several changes since then.  This is why the European manufacturers now require motor oils meeting their specs only.  Clutch slippage is not the only issue.  Excessive cam and gear wear do to a lack of EP additives and black sludge are problems too.  These will not show up immediately.
