Title: This thing sucks
Post by: rcmcfly on March 24, 2011, 06:58:53 PM
And I try to keep a policy of no judging. But if an asshole riding one of these waved at me i'd be tempted to shoot banana peels at him.

Please don't tell us that you just now found out about the Can-Am Spyders!!  [laugh]

that seems to be a pretty harsh statement.

When I get too old to ride a 2-wheeler, I'll be on one of those things.  Does Medicare help pay for one if my doctor prescribes it?

In fairness, we demoed one a few years back and YES it is different, but it has a lot of potential to be a lot of fun! It was a big mistake telling us that the traction control would prevent the rear wheel from spinning out....after hearing that, we couldn't stop trying to get it to do it....  [evil]

Wanted it to be like The Green Machine from back in the day:

There's nothing new about the Can Am Spyder but I hear that now you can use a Spyder to take the M1 test. Now that's wrong.

I see at least 1-2 day out here in Phoenix.  I'd be on one of those in a second before any H-D trike.

Ouch, personally I think it is a much better choice than a Hardly-Ableson trike if I were ever injured to the point that I couldn't ride a 'regular bike' but could still use one of those. I think they are an awesome alternative for someone who is injured or who's reaction/balance skills were degrading due to age, but could still safely ride one of these; but maybe that is the doctor in me trying to keep people moving and independant.

man you've been in a cave too long.  Wife and I took one for a spin together and separately.  When I'm no longer able to hold up two wheels THIS, or something similar, will be my choice.  It was fun I admit.

I'd rather see a bunch of people on can-ams than in cages and not riding.  You never know.  The guy on the can-am could have had way more motorcycle experience than you.  I would wave to him.  Now, I won't wave to scooter riders.

As far as my 3 wheel tastes go though, I would take one of these:

"Now you can take your motorcycle test on a Spyder and be riding the next day" quote from commercial.

Obviously catering to those too afraid or otherwise incapable of passing an M1 test which you could take on a 150 CC bike if you wanted too. I'd feel safer around a bunch of cagers than a bunch of poseurs. If you're too handicapped or too clumsy to ride just stay tfo of the way imo. I could just imagine a bunch of those horrid things clogging up Deals Gap and causing all sorts of death.

Not at all surprised to hear they're everywhere in AZ. I'd bet FL too
So if you get injured to the point you are unable to ride on two wheels, you don't deserve to ride in anything that isn't a cage?  Something tells me you haven't had anybody close to you become disabled while they're still young.

When I can no longer keep 2 wheels balanced, I know I'm going for 3 over a car.  We've got couple people that support the Avon Walk for the Cure and the Komen 3-day on our motocrew using those.  They're doing more on their 3-wheeler to support some great causes than most people.

They are pretty common here in Wisconsin - I have heard that they market them to the snowmobilers up here, stating that the handling is similar.

I'd like to test ride one.

My gut feeling is that they might be underpowered though. Needs a turbo.  [evil]

The regular models are a bit underpowered from what I remember. But I do think there is an "s" model.

My neighbor across the street was inches away from buying one last year... He developed a case of Monster Envy from looking at my M900 in my garage, but was afraid he'd crash a two-wheeler and kill himself.  So he found a guy with a Spyder and took it out for a ride.  He was getting ready to go back to the guy's house to buy it when I convinced him to take the ABATE rider course instead.

He got over his fear and passed the course, and wound up with a pretty sweet F800ST instead of the CanAm.  But he still doesn't have anything bad to say about the Spyder.

a guy brought his brand new spyder down to my shop last year for some "customization" He told me he wanted it to look like a ny yankees jersey... it came out like ass and really didnt want to do it in the first place. it did look like a jersey though big number 2 on the back and all. kind of put it into perspective of the kind of guy that buys a spyder...

I'm still ambivalent about the Spyders, but I wouldn't have scorned my neighbor if that was what he chose as his intro to riding.  I was just glad the guy acted on his dream of riding instead of doing nothing.

That said, if I gave up two-wheeling in favor of three, I'd be going this way:

I've seen a guy here in SoCal riding his can-am.... with a special rack on the back that holds his wheelchair...!

When you Can no longer ride on two... Go for three [thumbsup]

That guy gets the wave for sure.....  [moto]

IF I ever purchase a Can-Am before the first mile is put on the turbo is being put in.

Every time my dad and I start talking long-distance riding trips, grandma starts wanting to buy a spyder again... certainly would be an improvement from the scooter she rides around Sams club on.
