Title: '03 M620 fuel pump woes. Digging in today.
Post by: gfitzgi on March 25, 2011, 03:22:10 PM
I have been wrestling with this problem for a while now, but I need to get it solved so I can get back on the road.

I have an '03 M620 which has not been running since I replaced my battery a few months ago.  I was going to take my bike in to the dealer to get serviced, but I feel with my shop experience I can get through this one on my own.  It was going to cost me an arm and a leg any way.  So with my limbs intact here it goes...

The Problem : Fuel pump sounds are gone.  I turn on he engine and the dials go up and down, but no fuel pump "whine".  I can put enough gas in the engine so that in its vertical position it will idle, but not throttle up.  I talked to the local shop guys and they thought that maybe something was clogging the pump so they suggested that I pull the pump and "Bang it a few times" and see if that dislodges any thing and gets things running.

What I have done so far:  I have puled the pump once "banged" lightly and nothing happened. At the time I did not have indoor shop space so I had to put the thing back together after each attempt.  It seems like everything else is working (injectors are firing, gauges are working, lights are working) due to the fact that the engine idles with enough passive pressure in the lines.

What I am planning on doing now:  I am going to pull the pump again and test the leads to see if it is getting power, now that I have a decent multimeter this should be easy.  After reading some of the threads here I am going to check all soldered connections for integrity.  I would like to test the pump itself, and was planning on connecting it to a 12v power source to see what happens.  I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, but at this point I will try anything to get back on the road.  I would also love to avoid having to buy a new fuel pump unless I have to.

Toady I am going t pull the pump and test the leads.  I will wait to hear if any one chimes in on testing the pump itself until later.

If anyone out there has any ideas let me know.

Thanks for any advice.

Update: When I turn the key I get power to the leads going to the pump.  I still want to test the pump itself, but I am pretty sure that is the problem...

Bummer.

I've seen a couple of pumps frozen up from gas going crappy sitting in the tank.

FWIW, California Cycleworks has a pump that's way cheaper than OEM.

Any recomendations on trying to get the one I have running, or am I just screwed?

On rare occasion reverse polarity will free a pump up.  Worth a try.

All hail the heated ultrasonic parts cleaner!!!

Pump is running.  I need to run some fuel through it, but it sounds good so far.

Ran it in the cleaner, then pulled the pre-filter and pushed the pump manually around a few times, shook it a bit and were good.

Thanks for all the help here.  If anyone wants to any extra info feel free to ask.
