Title: Trouble starting 04 S4R
Post by: sneth on March 26, 2011, 06:11:58 PM
2004 S4R

Brand New Battery

-Turn key, initializes fine.
-Fuel Injection Activates
-Press Start and Engine turns maybe once.
-I keep pressing the Start button and it just kinda whines at me.Low pitch whine.

This is the first time trying to start it after winter. I thought it was just a dead battery, but the brand new one does the same thing. I have the Red Key but I have just been trying to the Black one currently. In neutral, kill switch is off. Immobilizer light is off.

I'm hoping this is just a simple security fix or something.

Don't think this is anything to do with the immobilizer.

Sounds like a bad connection or battery that was never fully charged.

I checked the battery and it was fully charged before I put it on.  It should be full power, but I haven't connected a multimeter to test it under load yet.  Bike in a garage, red key and tools at home.

I dont know the electrics on this bike very well yet, so are there common places to check. Searching the forum, some people mention the starter and a solenoid that may get carbon build up.  I'm not sure where to start though.

Fully charged does not mean good.  Take the battery and have it load tested or try jumping it from a known good battery.  A car is fine as long as it is not running.  Since the starter did turn the solenoid is an unlikely suspect.  Diagnosis by guess and assumption can be very pricey.

yeah. I've been thinking more about it.
I can't find any numbers for expected voltages.
Running Voltage, Under Load, and standing voltage?

Open cell voltage  (across the battery terminals) should be 12.8 volts.  This measurement should be taken either a few hours after the battery or the surface charge has been removed.  A small load on the battery will do this, such as headlight on for a few seconds.  Again, this means fully charged, not good.  A load test will determine this.  An alternative to a load test is to crank the engine over with your volt meter across the battery.  General spec is the battery should not drop below 9.6 volts.  Running at about 3K RPM you should see between 13.5 and 14.5 volts.  A problem with this test is it depends on a properly functioning starter circuit.  Doing further testing without confirming you have a good battery is a little like pissing up a rope.

I just re read your first post.  Could you describe the whine a little better?  Is it possible the whine you are hearing is the starter motor is turning but not cranking the engine?  This would indicate a problem with the sprag (over running clutch).
