Title: No spark...?
Post by: nuggethead on March 27, 2011, 12:04:06 AM
Hi all,

Helping a mate who is trying to get his '89 GSXR1100 running - Mmmmhhh no spark - i'm a shocker at electrical stuff but have tried:

- Full battery charge - has trouble cranking over - no spark on any plugs
- Jump start from car batt - cranks over fine - no spark on any plugs
- checked/refitted all leads - new plugs - no spark on any plugs
- Beyond my knowledge - very strong coffee - tools away.

I have tried other forums/searches on net and similar threads/posts tend to lead to CDI and/or signal generator. Has anyone any ideas or experienced this on thier own bike? How was the problem solved?

Thanks in advance.

Motor cranks over - would the kill switch disable power to plugs and still allow motor to crank over?

on some bikes thats exactly what happens , a common mistake

i would also check all fuses , a mate recently brought his bike over to me after not being able to work it out, cranking but no go
and sure enough a dead fuse

Gee, on a bike that old it could be lots of things, coils, pick-ups, cdi box, modified wiring, see if you can find where you have power, a wiring diagram will help.

Sorry I can't offer much help at the moment

But if you have any new info, post up.

Mmick,

Been working our way through wiring - two wrongs don't make a right so it's best fixed with some expert knowledge i.e. off to the garage. Will def post up when resolved.

have you unplugged the cdi and checked the plug for voltage with a meter? if you have voltage in, then check voltage on the + side of the coils, if the kill switch isn't on, you should find no power at one of those.
