So I'm about to do an oil change on my 998. I know there's a crush washer for the drain plug, and to my understanding there's also one for the mesh screen.
I picked up the oil/filter combo from Motowheels, along with other bits. Problem is, no crush washer(s).
I could phone California Cycleworks, Motowheels, or a dealer and get some of these. That said, it seems silly to have them ship washers to me when I'm not getting anything else.
Can you find acceptable substitutes at a hardware store, or am I going to be stuck shipping them?
I suppose I could probably reuse them, but when possible I like to do things the Right Wayâ,,¢.
Thoughts?
you could resuse them without any real dramas
if you really want to change them you could order them with bits for your next service
If they are made from ally replace them, made from copper just anneal them and reuse [thumbsup]
Mmick
i'd say just reuse it in this case, you'll likely be fine.
But next time your at/near a dealer, for any reason, stop in and ask them for a few.
My dealer gave me 10 for like $3...
Or you could call your nearest dealer, and they will likely toss them your way in an envelope with a stamp if your a couple hours out or something.
Motorcycle folks are all friends ;)
Most auto parts places have crush washers in an assortment of sizes as will any moto dealer - nothing ducati specific about the crush washers as far as I'm aware. You can also re-use, but take extra care when you tighten the drain plug as the used crush washer won't have much squish and it'll go from loose to stripped more quickly than with a new washer so be careful not to overtighten and strip the sump plug.

+1...
also be sure the sump screen washer doesn't fall off it's shoulder and get bent. I can't tell you how often that happens.
I've done plenty of oil changes without the crush washer being replaced. If I go in person to buy a filter, the dealer doesn't even ask, just grabs one and says "here's the crush washer, they're $0.30 and they're cheap insurance if you want it."
I've also gotten one from the local O'Reilly it is apparently close enough to work.
