Title: 695 to 1000 engine conversion
Post by: nmaino on March 29, 2011, 07:53:48 PM
Hello,

One of my main reasons for trying to sell my 695 is to get the upgraded engine found in the S2R 1000. If I'm not able to sell the 695, I might as well "make it my own."

For this reason, I would like to know if I can swap the S2R 1000 engine (from a 2007 donor bike) right into my 695 frame? My two major areas of concern are:

1. Will my 695 swingarm/rear shock work, or do I also have to upgrade to the S2R units (I think my shock and the S2R unit is the same)?
2. Will my stock 695 rearsets work with the new engine?
3. Along with the complete engine (ECU, gauges, airbox, throttle bodies, main wiring harness) is there anything else that I'll need to swap over, like the fuel pump, throttle control, etc?

I figure that the exhaust can be taken care of (QD ExBox) as can the suspension and brakes (GP suspension here I come).

Any advice would be great (please just do not tell me to sell the bike and just buy the S2R, I'm trying to do that at the moment).

Thank you!

I hope you'll soon get more/better answers than my non-expert thoughts [thumbsup]

1. the rocker assembly looks similar. Check here for parts # cross-reference http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do (http://www.ducati.com/services/maintenance/index.do)
Swing arm compatibility is beyond me. Maybe you need/want a single sided swingarm?

2. the two lower mounting points may or may not be in the same position. If you need to find out by yourself, you have to measure exactly where your foot peg assembly attaches to the frame. Transfer this measurement to a S2R/S4R at your dealer or a friend's bike - and eyeball how the two lower point line up. Still only a vague impression.....

3. throttle bodies probably, airbox maybe, but the rest might very well work from your 695. When I asked Ducati Kämna about a S2R800 to 1000 swap - I was told the dual spark plug was the only problem and a very easy/cheap one to fix. Again, consult the link above for air box/throttle bodies compatibility.

The exhaust does not fit, so you need to prepare for another solution there. If you keep the swingarm, I think you will have problems with a normal S*R system, due to the routing. An ExBox might be the easiest solution then.

The parts and labor won't be cheap. Maybe you're better off waiting for a 695 buyer..........

I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but I hope you have something to work with :)

Thanks for the reply, the ideas, and the pointers.

The only part that I'm really worried about is the swingarm. I think that all of the other "stuff" can be worked out . . . I'm not worried about paying somebody to do this swap (I used to be a Toyota tech, so I'm know how to use a set of tools . . . and a hammer!), but I am worried about getting the bike registered in California with a non-standard engine. Anybody have any ideas on this one?
