So having the morning coffee...flipping between CNN and Fox...
I now deduce (based on reporting/coverage) that Japan is no longer a news item....
the reactors are probably fixed and life there has probably returned to a degree of normalcy to the extent that no further coverage is required
radioactivity spread and contamination issues have evaporated
However I now understand the greatest current threat to mankind and the planet
is in Libya and the news coverage about this deadly planetary threat must run continuously 24x7
I hate the "news" media propaganda program...
selectively pimped by cosmetic cupcakes and Ken Doll dummies
when I watch the news, I prefer to watch BBC America....just sayin...
Unscientific based on their website:
BBC: Lead = Japan, Libya = 2nd
FOX: Lead = Libya, Japan = 3rd
CNN: Lead = Japan, Libya = 2nd
NPR: Lead = Japan, Libya = 2nd
ABC: Lead = Japan, Libya = Not on the front page.
Looks like Japan is still leading the (web) news.
Japan was so three weeks ago.
:P
I, too, hate the media.....
I was just thinking about this while I got ready for work.
There was a 25 year old mom missing for a week in Southern Ohio, they found her last night in a church septic tank. First thing out of the anchor's mouth; "A story we brought to you first". Who gives a make the beast with two backs that you broke the story first there is a mother of 3 kids dead and stuffed in a septic tank.

Oh yes the media's Human "Dung Beetles"
that make a feast out of life's shit...
"we found this turd of tragedy first!!! stay tuned we are going to ask her daughter if she's upset that her mother was strangled with her own entrails"I guess it should be no surprise...they pander to everyone's ghoulish morbidity....like traffic jams caused by accident rubber-neckers looking for the gore on the side of the road....I always lay on the horn and keep it down when someone slows or stops to stare

unfortunately I just got sucked into wanting to know what was going on in Japan
and how far-reaching the contamination is projected to spread...
so I stayed in front of the TV for too long...fully believing they would switch over to the news in the PacRim
before realizing as Speedbag put it that "Japan was so 3 weeks ago"

Very accurate description.
We as mankind have evolved a good deal. But a good car wreck, murdered mom, scenes of looting, etc. will bring us right back to the days of throwing Christians to the lions. And the "news media", they know what sells.

That Idiocracy video cracks me up! [laugh] Funny, my wife and I have had a similar discussion many times. :P
The news is what it is. I have to watch (and read on line) several news programs to feel like I have gotten most (never all) of the story. It's a business and they are selling ads just like magazines and newspapers. That won't ever change.
It's scary listening to stuff on local tv news that is truly just made up about the juvenile cases I do. I know fact checking is difficult with a confidential system, but every time it appears they truly just invent shit to say. No info? just wing it.
[popcorn]
I don't have a TV. I listen to the radio for most of my news. NPR and the BBC only. I do read CNN and the 2 local newspapers online. I see tv sometimes and wonder who people can stand it.
The news slogan on one of the channels here in Phoenix..
"Telling it like it is"
Right. [roll]

same here. haven't had TV service since 2003. dont miss it a bit.
also no tv here, if i feel the urge to watch something i steal it from the internet...arrrrrr
Show Anne Curry on the doll where the ruthless dictator touched you.
A lot of the news is just disaster porn. It does not help advance understanding or inform. It tends to be exploitative.
I like the brit paper The Guardian and NPR, as imperfect as they are.
^^^ Disaster Porn....I like that ...accurate....this is at best "infotainment" it is not informative...
information makes most folks eyes glaze over after 30 milliseconds and they are on their way to the Kardashians' latest crisis or some other schadenfreude blasted at them from the screen
now this is not to say that lies slander libel and propaganda have not gone on for centuries in the print or written media...19th Century Yellow Journalism and all that....Remember the Maine etc etc
I just lament that the communications tools we have created are making us dumber rather than smarter
guess it is like fire...
you can cook and warm yourself with it and build a civilization upon its potentials....
and you can also use it to burn down a civilization
I get all my news coverage from the Daily Show.
at least they know what they are.

I heard someone else say "disaster porn," but I think it fits well.
As far as yellow journalism - good call! I'm a big fan of http://policegazette.us/ (http://policegazette.us/) That journal was one of the best of the era, lovingly digitized and occasionally current events get the Police Gazette mock up.
Whenever I find myself in need of a more extreme delivery of the news, I tune in to 'The Savage Nation'.
That guys over-the-top!
I check the news real quick before I leave the house in the morning, mainly to make sure it's worth going out to start up the car. If the actual end of the world is going on or something, make the beast with two backs it, I'm going back to bed.
Same thing at work, need to check the news every so often from the Blackberry just to ensure I'm not wasting my time worrying that I need to complete whatever I'm working on.
I saw this on Evil Milk before I heard anything about Libya on the news and that was last Friday.

Financial Times: Libya = 2nd, Japan = not on front page.

I love the fact that so many people here don't have tv. I've never owned one and I often wonder how people can stand it? 90% of what is one is an insult to humanity, and the remaining 10% is still plagued with commercials that make me want to dig my eyeballs out with a rusty spoon.
As far as news go, I've gotten into the habit of picking up the 'leftover' news at the gym - everyone's discarded magazines. My Economist subscription lapsed a couple months ago and since I've been really busy, I let it go. I know I'm in the general minority when I say I prefer to read things then have someone tell them to me - I find people's voices generally annoying for the most part.

If you have "never" owned one, how do you know what's on?
Oh and what does all your furniture point at? :D
I listen to NPR in the mornings.
Everyone at work says that makes me a "liberal"
But I like it, because I've yet to hear a story about Charlie Sheen or Lindsey Lohan on the NPR morning news.

I believe you when you say you don't have a T.V. because you believe that commercials only comprise 10% of what's on. Try 40-50%. ;)
The Economist is a good source for news. My subscription lapsed as well, so now I just check out their website.
We have very basic T.V. service only because we had to pay for it to get a decent internet connection. Think we have about 12 channels, 6 of which are in Spanish. So six channels of soap operas and raunchy game shows. The other six are crap as well.
I have a TV and am proud to admit it....doesn't mean I have to use it for what most of the rest of America does...
there are thousands of different networks with programming of various natures...my faces include ( but are not limited to) History Channel, Discovery Channel, Food Network, Cooking Channel, Versus, Speed, HBO, Showtime,......

No Reservations is a great show.
I love to watch tv, some shows are mindless entertainment. News channels are mindless and not entertaining, hence why I don't watch them.
I work for cable so unless you guys want my fam to starve, get a damn tv...
