Title: high idle on M1100
Post by: okpanic on March 30, 2011, 12:30:01 PM
So after ride around a little today, I pulled into the gas station to fill up. sat with the bike idling for about a minute waiting for a pump, then pulled in and turned off the bike with the key (not the kill switch). fulled up the bike, closed the gas cap and started up the bike. as soon as it fired up it idled at 2k instead of the normal 1200. thinking it was maybe a stuck cable I rode home randomly revving the engine trying to get it to settle down. even by the time I got home 10 minutes later it was still idling at 2k. the only thing I have done different than normal is to use the key to shut it off and not the kill switch. it was not over heated and it was around 70 degrees. the only thing I can think off is maybe something happened when I changed the oil yesterday? but wouldn't that have shown up on my ride to work this morning? TIA

Most likely your idle air control valve (the "stepper motor") is stuck in an open state, allowing excess air past the throttle plates.

I don't think the M1100 has an idle control motor.  I assume you checked that you did not accidentally move the fast idle lever?

1100 has stepper motor,  no fast idle

Yes, I stand corrected.  696 has the fast idle lever.

Something similar just happened to me. After work, go to start my '10 M1100S and it kept stalling. So finally got it started and took a few passes around the parking lot, it kept stalling when I put it in neutral and let go of the throttle. So I finally figured I'd have to be careful when stopped at lights to keep my throttle slightly on to keep the revs from falling off. About 10 mins in my commute home, I came to a stoplight and let go of the throttle, it kept running. Seemed like the problem fixed itself.

So I decided to top up my tank since I was about down to about a 1/4 tank left, when I went to leave the gas station, the bike (on neutral) revs to between 3000-3500 rpms without any input from me. I make the rest of my way home carefully and shut down the bike as soon as I got into my garage.  So I'm guessing that it possibly has something to do with gas levels? Or type of gas? I waited about an hour and went to turn over the bike, still revving at 3,000+ rpms.

Any idea(s) what might be causing this problem?

Thanks for any help.

I think the OP has an issue with a stuck or faulty idle stepper motor... and I think the same thing is likely to be your issue too.

Those are the exact same symptoms I had.  Low idle and stalling, followed by a "permanent" high idle of several thousand RPM.

My bike has now been in the shop for three months (since April 11th) waiting for the part to come in.  Thanks again, Ducati.
