Title: Removing rear brake side rearset
Post by: 696DCRider on April 01, 2011, 11:34:28 AM
I just pulled off my rearsets and top triple to get powder coated.  I'm having trouble removing the brake sensor.  I know a bunch of people have done this before.  Any tips.  I see there is some type of hex part of the wire.  I tried turning it and its getting a little stripped.  Here is pic of the sensor wire hanging off the rearset:

Errrr....April Fool's..errrrrr.  Uhhhh, yeah, that's what this thread was.

I pretty much answered my own question in the question itself.  I just needed to turn the sensor using a lock wrench instead of a normal one to get a little more leverage on it.  It just came loose.  Now back to your regularly scheduled program.....

At least it wasn't asking us to retrieve you from under you bike - if on an older DSS Monster, you removed the rear set on the gear side, it was one of two bolts holding the side stand in place.

yeah, with only one bolt they predictably would rotate. Heard story of someone who managed to get the rearset off and the bike stayed put... but a bit so they didn't think anything of it not being the most mechanically inclined sort. Predictably as some time passed, the side stand got tired of only having one bolt and *crash*

Yeah, I removed that rearset too.  I had it on a rear stand, but I replaced the bolt so hopefully I don't come out to the bike on its side because I took off the rear stand, lol.

Now, I'm going to make a trip to Figure Engineering tomorrow to finally get my stuff powdercoated black.

I dropped my 696 on myself pulling the left side rearset while on the sidestand.  (didnt fall completely...caught it at the LAST second) So thats not limited to the old monsters.

word to the wise...be SUPER careful putting that brake side back together, i wrecked that switch the first go around getting it all adjusted right.  Ive got some pics somewhere of what I ended up with when i had mine done, ill look for em when i get home.

Also, I would try and find some clear 3m plastic and put it over the flat sections or your heel will wear through the powder coat.

what else, what else...make sure you chase out the threads lest you break a bolt trying to tighten everything up, and run some ~180 grit paper over the mating surfaces of where your pegs attach or theyll be a PITA to get in (grease 'em too)
