Title: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Com4tably Numb on April 02, 2011, 08:18:47 PM In my introduction I posted that I was going to buy a 2004 Monster.
Well, I ran the VIN and it ended up being a 2002 Monster. Being a 2002 is not going to stop me from buying it, but I believe in 2002 there were a few different Models on Ducati's Monster 750s. I ran through 5 different sites for VIN Checks, and 2 sites gave me Model name 2002 Ducati M750 and three other gave me Model M-750 IE Monster 750 Dark / M-750 IE Monster 750 / M-750 IE Monster 750 S. I know the mechanic personally, and he wouldn't screw me over. I've checked the background on it, not a salvaged like he assure me, runs and feels great. He bought it from a friend, but didn't bother to asked for records or manuals because he trusted his friend and has worked on Ducatis before. He service it as soon has he got it. He advice me to change the oil in 2,000 miles, and change the back tire in 600 miles. Is there anyway to find out if it's an "S" or not? Or would I have to take it to a Ducati dealer? The mechanic selling it to me mentioned it was an 748S, meaning a 750S, but I want to be sure before buying parts. I've been looking for bike parts and a few site asked if it's a M750 or M750S. It looks exactly like this.... (http://nationalmotorsales.com/image_upload/1234976592_DUCAT.jpg) Any Help would be appreciated. I've been checking around, and I believe $3,200 is a reasonable price. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Spidey on April 02, 2011, 08:49:33 PM It's an '02 750 with the grey color scheme with red wheels, often called a Senna. Whether it's an "S" model or a standard model, I don't remember there being both a 750S and 750 that year. Someone around here will own one and will be able to give you a definitive answer.
For the purpose of buying parts, it doesn't matter. Please note that it is NOT a 748S (even though the engine displaces 748cc). It is a Monster 750 or M750. A Ducati 748S is a completely different bike. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Com4tably Numb on April 02, 2011, 08:54:44 PM Thanks for the help.
Yep, I do realize I mentioned 748, but I was talking about the CCs. Thanks again. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Com4tably Numb on April 02, 2011, 11:08:01 PM Ok, I just realize that he only has one black key.
I've been reading about the red key issue and it's scaring me money wise. Should I expect a nightmare? Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: justinrhenry on April 03, 2011, 05:18:03 AM 3200 seems a little high to me for a 2002. how many miles?
Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: ducpainter on April 03, 2011, 05:24:18 AM The bike pictured is an S, I believe. It has an aluminum swingarm. I can't say if the one you're looking at is or not.
The one black key may or may not be an issue depending on if you ever have a gauge or ecu problem. $3200 would be top dollar IMO. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: muskrat on April 03, 2011, 05:42:46 AM If you're set on this bike drop the price $500 to make up for the loss of the keys. SOS diagnostics will cut a new red and black key. Also, Houston Superbikes will reflash and take out your immobilizer if you don't want to bother getting a red key.
Is this your first bike? If so then the 750 will do but you can also snag a good M900 for the same price and get your dry clutch to boot. ;) If it's a 750 ie then it's fuel injected. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Com4tably Numb on April 03, 2011, 08:58:28 AM Thanks for all the replies.
This bike has only 9,626 miles. I believe it's a fair price, compared to the ones I've seen in this state (CA). I found a few that go for $$3,800 to $4,000. I spoke with him this morning, he assured me he can get me another spare black, but not the red key. I'm going to make sure he give me a spare black key before I buy. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: redxblack on April 03, 2011, 09:21:46 AM That's the 2002 M750S i.e.
The red key headaches would apply here, but I really do like that bike. My brother has one. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: gregrnel on April 03, 2011, 09:27:11 AM Tell him the red key missing is worth a $500 discount, because IT IS!
Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Gator on April 04, 2011, 05:01:45 PM I'll sell you my red key for $500.
The bike is Priced right; its a Senna Edition they only made 200 of them world wide. I have one of them and I met one other owner at the Ducati in the Rockies. The 750ie is a great engine, you won't be sorry you bought this bike. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: hbliam on April 04, 2011, 06:41:08 PM its a Senna Edition they only made 200 of them world wide. It's grey with red wheels, which some will (incorrectly) label a Senna but it is not a authorized Senna Edition. His foundation does not receive anything from Ducati. This IS a Senna and the reason people call anything grey with red wheels a Senna. The color listed on the title is "senna" (on 13's bike). I'm not claiming it's authorized, but that's how it's registered.
Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Com4tably Numb on April 04, 2011, 10:00:17 PM Yep,
Called SOS this morning they said it would cost $350 for the Red Key and $40 for another Black Key. And I have to send in my original Black Key, meaning I can't even have fun with my M750 for awhile. Kinda sucks when you find something you like and shit gets in the way. If the guy doesn't want to lower the price the hell with it, I'll still buy it, but I will try tomorrow morning. Money is not an issue, but if I could save some money why the hell not. Thanks for all the help guys. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Twizted on April 04, 2011, 10:04:15 PM That is a nice looking monster there Com4. Like another posted said see if you can get some cash off the price as prices in dealerships are usually only asking prices and are set to be haggled with. Use the red key issue and the fact he mentioned you have to do an oil and tyre change soonish.
Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: seevtsaab on April 05, 2011, 08:04:02 AM fwiw I'd go for the price to delete the immobilizer.
This is from someone with a red key but no immobilizer code. Who has not disabled the immobilizer, and hopes to hell he doesn't regret it (so far so good, 2 years, knock on wood) Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Gator on April 06, 2011, 09:54:20 AM It's grey with red wheels, which some will (incorrectly) label a Senna but it is not a authorized Senna Edition. All the paper work says Senna Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: hbliam on April 06, 2011, 11:10:16 AM Whether or not Ducati Paid they made 200 750ie Senna and available to north America only. All the paper work says Senna The color combo is cool and all (I had a '02 S4 in the same colors) but it's still not a Senna and certainly not a limited edition bike. Colorrite list the color as Senna gray and that's the point. The color has taken on the name due to it's similarity to the Senna edition bikes. So it may be listed as the color of the bike on your paperwork but it's not notating the bike as a Senna or a Senna Edition. Not a huge deal. Just trying to let the OP know he's not buying anything other then a M750 with gray (senna) paint. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: ZOSO on April 06, 2011, 11:52:29 AM Not a huge deal. Just trying to let the OP know he's not buying anything other then a M750 with gray (senna) paint. Not entirely correct. Other than the sweet paint scheme, the 2002 M750s i.e. (vs M750 i.e.) had new aluminum swing arm and headlight fairing, increased ground clearance, and CF side panels and heat guards. It was also only sold in the USA. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: hbliam on April 06, 2011, 03:41:04 PM Not entirely correct. Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Stain777 on April 29, 2011, 07:50:32 PM I bought this exact bike last Summer. It's been a blast and I haven't regretted it for an instant. You're looking at the M750 S.i.e, which isn't technically a Senna but everyone refers to it as such due to the coloring.
It turns a lot of heads and lends me a coolness that disappears when I'm not sitting on it. Enjoy! :) Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Dave R on April 29, 2011, 09:59:51 PM price is more than fair, a clean one up here will still bring 4500 all day long..
they're right about the upgraded bits like aluminum swingarm, adjustable ride height and limited production. Only year for the FI on a 750... Title: Re: About to buy a 2002 Monster Post by: Loyalizer on May 05, 2011, 12:28:11 AM If you bought the bike already congrats, if not, I would ask that he knock off two or three bills off for the red key. Ducati are the only bikes I know personally that come with the immobiliser stock...
