Wife and I will be there this Wed-Saturday picking up my new (to me) 999.
The bike is in Summerville (about a half hr from Charleston).
Looking for places to stay that are on the cheap side. I don't need $120/night, but then again, I don't want $50/night type of places either.
Also, what are some cool things we should go see while we're there? Wednesday will be all day drive to get there so we decided to hang around a couple days to make the trip worth it (like a 999 doesn't have that covered already )

I was told by a friend of mine that Charleston SC is beautiful to see, but in reality, you can just check in at a nearby town about an hour outside and save a ton of money. which is what i will be doing when im there in exactly 14 days.
Summerville and orangeburg were the 2 places that I palnned on stopping (depending on fatigue and time frame) was going to hit charleston up for breakfast.

Back in 1984 I spent a week on Kiawah Island which is just South of Charleston and about 1/2 hour out Bohicket Rd..
It's an Island, you cross a small body of water to reach it's Eastern most tip, but otherwise it is encircled by the Atlantic on all sides.
It is Private but you might be able to to get a guest pass if you said you wanted to look at Real Estate or may be you could book reservations at one of the Hotels for a meal.
It's so cool.
It is not like Hilton Head in that is has very little Commercialization.
It's about 12 miles long if I remember correctly and mostly left as a Nature Preserve with very expensive homes and Golf Courses tucked in Nature.
It's the only Island on the East Coast that sits perpendicular to the Coast , therefore the beaches are very big and very little Sea erosion.
The Dunes are covered w. Sea Oats , there are Deer , Alligators and other wild Animals about.
Definitely worth a days venture if you can make it happen.

Charleston is my hometown and is an absolutely beautiful city. The downtown area is a nice place to spend time, great restaurants, typical shopping, good sights, etc. Summerville, where your bike is located, is about 20 minutes outside the city. It's not a bad place in itself, but I wouldn't be spending a ton of time there. Do yourself a favor and go to one of the beaches, Folly Beach is really nice and has some good little restaurants, bars, etc. Hell, at this time of year and if the weather is nice, I probably wouldn't leave the beach. Kiawah, as Dolph said is reall nice too, but nowadays you have to be a member to venture out to anything worth a damn. At night, sometimes you can't travel more than 15mph out there because of all the deer... its insane.
I'm a chef, so I am particular to the food, and there are a lot of really exceptional award winning restaurants. FIG (owner is a Ducatista), McCradys, Five Loaves Cafe (for lunch... used to work here)... The aquarium isn't anything really special, but it's right on the water and can be entertaining.
King Street, Meeting Street and East Bay Street are the main drags in the downtown area and all run parallel to each other. It's not that hard to navigate through, as it's not that big.
Hope you have a good time, and enjoy it... Living in Las Vegas now just doesn't compare...
If you're wanting to stay downtown, within walking distance to The Battery, Waterfront, Rainbow Row, the Market etc, I strongly encourage you to check out the Vendue Inn. They really take care of their customers, we're talking greeting by first name etc. Wine & cheese reception at 4PM, milk & cookies at 9PM.
Food? Take a stop in at Social Wine Bar (barely a block from the Vendue) for happy hour and maybe even stay for a meal.
Do a walking tour or three.

Is there still a Restaurant up in the air overlooking Charleston ?
Like 6 or 8 stories up.
May be it was a Chain at the time I was there in '84 like a Holiday Inn.
Didn't Hurricane Hugo blow down all the giant trees in Downtown back in '89 ?

Yeah the restaurant is still there... I believe it's called the Harbour View? but it is definitely still in the round, river view Holiday Inn just across the Ashley River... nice hotel for the money and views BTW
Hugo did blow down quite a few of the really tall trees in Charleston, but some still stand... the one that fell into the roof of my childhood home wasn't so lucky.
Charleston really is such a beautiful city, but it sometimes gets a bad rap due to the crime (95% of it is in the north area where you wouldn't want to be anyway) and old money racism. Like Journeyman said... stay downtown and do a few of the walking tours and just walk around in general. The carriage tours can be fun and informative, but sometimes they just make shit up.
