Title: Do you have two mirrors on your bike or just one?
Post by: Radar on April 03, 2011, 08:24:34 AM
Howdy folks,

This question falls under the "who cares" category.

But I'm just wondering... I've always run a single mirror on the left side, and I feel perfectly comfortable and well covered.

I notice, however, many riders have two mirrors. If you're one of those, do you actually use both?

On my Monster, I have the convex CRG, and it gives an excellent view as to what's going on behind me...  I guess I do tend to actually turn my head to look around, though...

Just wondering,

Eric M.

I run two mirrors. Both crg ls. I use the right one the most. Head check for the left side. I just like the way two mirrors look.

I run one on the left side. It's an ebay knockoff but it works quite well. I always check with my head anyways

2 Napolean bar ends, great coverage.

running two bar ends, but set them up differently

Left is for the left fast lane... highspeed passers and the blind spot.
Right is for directly behind... after passing to move back into the lane and at stop lights/around town/etc

my right blind spot i worry about less with traffic in europe as passing on the right RARELY happens, usually idiot newbie Americans  [bang]

I use a CRG LS on the left. Don't really need them on both sides. I put the stockers back on for inspection though.

620 has 1 small CRG and then 1100 has 2

i dont like the CRGs for 2 reasons

with clip ons you really have to turn your head away, and they are the prime reason why i no longer rely on my mirrors ( i ran ebay CRG clones for a year). I originally had Napleons which were great and were big enough to give me a good view.

however because i ride a city bike bar end mirrors get broken when knocked down. ive destroyed 3 Napoleons and 4 CRG clones i think. now i have rizoma ones that mount to the masters, bike hasnt gone down yet!

I've always run two... Rizoma Reverse Retro's first... Now CRG lanesplitters.

I'd still look over my shoulder every now and then though.....

Of course on Saturday I cut a sweeper too tight and detonated my left mirror glass on a plastic lane divider..

Now I have one mirror... [thumbsup]

same for me... right is rear view mirror basically, and left is set up to see a lane over.

still head check for all turns though

I have 2 on my 3 bikes.

I actually tried just the left mirror on my old S4Rs one day and really felt very " naked " out there , so I'm happy w. 2.

I head check if in traffic, but usually where I ride I don't  have any traffic to worry with other than what I pass .

I do headcheck on my left as a habit.

Use two. Probably don't need both, but it balances me mentally.

Same here, except with inverted left/right cuz we ride/drive on the left lane of the road.

This thread has turned out to be very interesting and revealing.

I've been riding for many years, but you folks have introduced some compelling perspectives, strategies.

Now I'm considering adding a second mirror!

I'm glad I asked...but with two bar end mirrors, I don't think my bike will fit through the front door... I keep my bike in the living-room.

I'm glad I asked!

I run one 2" CRG on the left side of my Monster.  It doesn't do much, but its nice to know when someone is behind you.  I have the two stock honker mirrors on my 999, they don't do much, except let me admire my elbows.  I usually just turn and look.

I used no mirrors for a long time... then put on one Rizoma reverse retro bar end.  So much nicer having a mirror on the left side again.

When it came time to start riding on base, I had to have two mirrors (so sayeth the boss man), and bought a set of fleabay knockoffs for the rizoma prototype...  now I run one real Rizoma, and one knockoff, and I love having two mirrors!

I run one leftside fleabay knockoff.

And hate it... considering upgrading as my mirror keeps moving at speed no matter how tight.

If you are only going to run one side, you might as well make it a nice mirror.

Of our two Monsters, 1 has both stock mirrors, the other has 1 left side bar-end mirror. I really like having the 1 and feel that I check often and am safe in that regard. The dual mirrors seems about just as effective.

On a side note, I had my bike in the shop recently and took of the bar-end mirror so that it wouldn't be in the way, and when I rode it home without any mirror, I felt like I was totally blind to what was happening behind me.

Definitly need 1, don't really need 2.

[moto]

On a side note, I got my bar-end mirror from REI....$15 I think - works fine, is easy to adjust, and takes the vibration out of the end of the bar.

My knockoff isn't that bad, but it is MUCH looser than the real deal... also some of the "stainless" parts of it have rusted over completely... rizoma has not.

I don't know how you guys only use 1. I like to know what's behind/beside me all the time.

With the one, I can see the breath of what's behind me across the lane, but I always head check regardless just to be sure.

Seems you'd have a blindspot on the non-miror side near the rear of your bike though. Sure, you can do a head-check. I am contantly glancing at both mirrors though just so I know what's around me.

Everyone has their own methods.  [beer]

You're absolutly right - there is one towards the far right but the head check takes care of that! I just gotten used to it, and hardly notice it. Plus for me, doing a head check makes me feel more engaged.

i'm always a bit paranoid about knowing what's around me too...  for me, i constantly scan the mirrors at lights because i've seen way too many videos and articles about people getting slammed into by trucks at lights recently.

Just thinking about that creeps me out. Quite often when I come to a light, I'll watch the vehicular traffic behind me to be sure they are stopping too.

I run one L/S bar end because that's how the previous owner had it set up.  I said from the get go I would get another for the R/S but have gotten so used to it I'll probably just leave it.

I always find that when riding on group rides I use my two mirrors a lot. If I can't see a following bike in one I will always check the other and sure enough there they are. I know you may be able to get away with one mirror if you use bar ends as they are usually convex and give a better field of view. But even on my other bike I use 2 bar end mirrors to keep me happy.

You worry me!

Eric M.

That's OK...you're behind me.  Worry all you like.   ;D

The bike in the avatar no longer has mirrors on it .... just to provide consistency between words and actions.  They've been gone for most of a decade, along with my desire to do stoppies.

In all seriousness, why do you care what's back there?

I was hit from behind once by a car.  I had mirrors when it happened.  They didn't help.  The car hit the bike behind me, too.  And the bike beside me.  In fact, the car went half way through the intersection before the idiot driving it realized she'd hit anything!

I'd rather concentrate on my riding and where I'm going than what the idiots behind me are doing.

I am a tool.  I actually have THREE mirrors.  Two stock and a left side bar end.  I commute in Boston traffic and lanes merging from the right onto 128 are my biggest fear.

I just haven't been able to get used to the height of the bar end mirror <shrugs>.  I am not cool.

I use to ride with one bar-end mirror on the right side. Now I'm back to two regular mirrors, what a difference!

But i've always wanted to do what my co-worker did on his buell. He had mirrors on his gloves, and passed them of as mirrors. It was cool, i had never seen it before.

On the ST4 stock mirrors, but on the Monster its just one mirror in board of the brake master (we do ride on the left in Oz land) and it hangs under the handlebar so I look under my right arm, still do the head check thing.

2 crg on the monster  (crg looks good but hate the fact that i can't gauge distance well and cant c top of the  [leo] cars)

1 cheapie bar end on left - on the Triumph S3  - head-check right side a lot

I find the 1 is enough.

No way I can ride without any mirror.   I head-check a lot but still I need to know what's around and the mirror helps me gauge traffic when changing lanes etc.  Not sure how people do it without any mirror.

Interesting thread  [thumbsup]

^^^^ No shit.  Flew out to get picked up by my aunt and uncle who live in Cambridge and work in Boston a few years ago.  I'm an aggressive driver, but that 20 or so minutes scared the holy living hell out of me.

I use 2 Napoleans.  I also pitch one slightly up and one slightly down to give a little better view from the top or bottom of hills.
