Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: orangelion03 on April 05, 2011, 08:35:26 AM Was thinking about taking Friday off and heading up there. If my clutch parts come in today and I get it back together in time...

Well riding will definitely put a smile on your face but it certainly won't help the pain!! The drugs will though! ;D [thumbsup] Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: lawbreaker on April 06, 2011, 05:11:47 PM Damn you work......!!!! [bang]
working Thursday at noon... but i'm off fri-sat-sun!! if by chance plans change lemme know ! Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: The Bearded Duc on April 06, 2011, 05:22:34 PM Started going up today but on the way up my pal's clutch cable broke. So we limped down the hill and spent the rest of the "ride" installing a new cable.
[bang] [bang] [bang] Anyhow, probably won't make it up this weekend since there is supposed to be rain but we are going up next week for sure. Maybe Thursday (04/14)?? I'll keep posting in this thread with the deets. The more the merrier! Robert - your clutch will be done by then right? Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: orangelion03 on April 07, 2011, 09:52:29 AM Robert - your clutch will be done by then right? Finished the clutch install last night. Installed braided line, filled, and bled the system so she's ready to go for a test ride after work. The clutch replacement went well thanks to copies of the factory shop manual, a Haynes manual, and an online parts fiche...gotta love the internet [clap] Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: The Bearded Duc on April 07, 2011, 12:03:12 PM Yeah, I can't imagine what it would be like having to "wing" it when it comes to doing something like the clutch.

Oh, wait... orangelion03 doesn't have a Duc anymore... :-\ Replacing the clutch on the 999 was a piece of cake. I called Stew a few times to make sure I wasn't gonna make the beast with two backs anything up too badly, and away I went. I <3 dry clutches! ;D [bacon] Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: The Bearded Duc on April 07, 2011, 11:18:44 PM That's what we have Duck-Stew for! Went for a test ride yesterday afternoon to check the clutch. Works great! "Unfortunately, sometime between the last ride when I discovered the slipping clutch and yesterday's test ride, the carbs decided to malfunction. The engine was stumbling and running rough, and I thought it might be low on fuel. I turned onto a side street to turn the petcock to reserve...as i was making a u-turn, the bike stumbled and I fell over. Yes, just like the trike rider on Laugh In (I'm old). I picked up and rode to the nearest gas station to fill up. As I was leaving the pump, I smelled gas, looked down and saw that fuel was pouring from the overflow tubes, both of them. As the fuel flow is controlled by a vacuum valve on the petcock, it stopped when I shut it off. Anyway, either something got screwed up when i removed the pollution control parts while I was waiting for clutch parts to arrive, or the fall-over knocked crap loose in the bowls and stuck the valves open. Good thing the weather is supposed to be bad this weekend... Did I mention I miss my Monster? Idjit... Blahblahblahblahblah blahblahblahblahblah blahblahblahblahblah Did I mention I miss my Monster? Idjit... [bang] Karma... :-* Seriously, though... Sucks that you're having so many problems. Glad you're okay after your tip-over. Wait... Didn't you buy a Japanese bike because you wanted something more reliable for commuting and longer trips? ;) [bacon] Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: orangelion03 on April 08, 2011, 01:41:46 PM Wait... You just wanna get out there and ride the damned thing!
From what advice I have received, one or more of the float valves is clogged with crud. Since the bike is over ten years old and only 7400 miles, it sat for long periods of time with little fuel flow so there is carp in the tank that got sloshed around when I took the tank off and on several times. I'm going to pull the carbs, clean them, and install a jet kit while I'm inside. Then install an inline fuel filter. [thumbsup] Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: The Bacon Junkie on April 09, 2011, 12:15:57 PM You might want to take the carp out of the tank, too, while you're at it... ;D
Need a hand? I could prolly get there by 4:30ish today. I'll be at the Shell on Sunland and Oro Vista around noon. I haven't been out to ACH for some time because I thought most of it was still closed. Also, I though Newcombs had closed as well. Are they both open? If so, anyone up for a run up there this Saturday (16 April)? Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: arai_speed on April 11, 2011, 12:22:06 PM I haven't been out to ACH for some time because I thought most of it was still closed. Also, I though Newcombs had closed as well. Are they both open? If so, anyone up for a run up there this Saturday (16 April)? Both have been open for some time. Just to clarify the "front side" of the 2 (up from La Canada Flintridge) is still closed. You need to go up Big Tujunga Canyon Rd via Sunland and either take Upper Big Tujunga across to the 2 or Angeles Forest Hwy also to the 2. Once on the 2 you can't miss NCR. I went up a couple of weeks ago and the road was very dirty, lots of sand and water run off from the melting snow. I saw a picture this weekend of Darren the bartender at NCR shoveling black ice: (http://i56.tinypic.com/jgs12p.jpg) I heard two people hit the deck because of it. Be carefull up there. Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: NorDog on April 11, 2011, 12:49:53 PM Thanks for the tip.
I think I'll wait a spell before heading up. Maybe I'll head up San Gabriel Canyon Road instead. Title: Re: Lunch at Newcombs Post by: lawbreaker on April 12, 2011, 06:18:56 PM Thanks for the tip. Seemed like all the gravel was cleared off as well.
Supposed to be in the 80's this weekend!! Anyone planning on heading up either Saturday or Sunday? |
