Title: Places to get maintenance material Post by: Nel of Bklyn on April 12, 2011, 08:56:55 PM Was wondering where do you guys go to for engine oils, and or other parts should you choose to service it yourself, available locally? If not then I guess online would be last option.
Title: Re: Places to get maintenance material Post by: thought on April 13, 2011, 11:46:51 AM i normally just go to autozone or advance auto parts for the oil... for the tools, i got the SSS spanner from monsterparts.com
by me in nj, there is a bike shop circle cycle that i can get all the rest of the random little things i need like oil filters etc. there is also motorcycle mall a bit further away too. go look up the sticky on the top of this form for more bike shops if you need more moto specific items. Title: Re: Places to get maintenance material Post by: He Man on April 13, 2011, 08:01:35 PM how often do u change the oil?
1 gallon is good for 1 change + some spare. 12 quarts is good for 3 changes plus some spare. so im not paying that much more. Maybe 8 bucks more per change for a much much better oil ( as reviewed by countless oil experts) Title: Re: Places to get maintenance material Post by: CDawg on April 14, 2011, 07:25:43 AM I get my Mobil1 Racing 4t from Eliteetc.com.
I get my filters from my dealer. Cleaning supplies, I use AutoZone/Pep Boys/etc... Title: Re: Places to get maintenance material Post by: ducatiz on April 14, 2011, 07:59:34 AM Advance Auto sells Mobil1 4t, but now has Castrol and Valvoline 4T, both full synthetic.
They also have the Fram PH6019 filter which fits but it is a POS. Maybe 8 bucks more per change for a much much better oil ( as reviewed by countless oil experts) around once a year... but my 796 has a wet clutch so i cant use car oil :\ in terms of bang for the buck for wet clutches, i dont think you can really get much better than the rotella. Title: Re: Places to get maintenance material Post by: He Man on April 14, 2011, 10:03:49 AM i change my oil about twice a year. but this year, its going to be only 1x!
Title: Re: Places to get maintenance material Post by: Nel of Bklyn on April 14, 2011, 09:17:37 PM So does one change it before going into winter storage, as once a year? Or actually after winter storage? Or does it depends on how much/often you ride?
I'm just trying to figure out, how often it should be done. Title: Re: Places to get maintenance material Post by: Howie on April 15, 2011, 04:11:24 AM It is best to change oil before storage. Would I change the oil if it was changed recently, like 500 miles before? Probably not unless the 500 miles is all short trips. You want to avoid storing the bike with contaminents in the oil.
Here is a good thread on storage: http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=4169.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=4169.0) Title: Re: Places to get maintenance material Post by: ducatiz on April 15, 2011, 06:55:30 AM It is best to change oil before storage. Here is a good thread on storage: http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=4169.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=4169.0) Good link. Here is my short version: 0. Wash bike first! A cold wash is fine, just get all the grime and spill off. 1. Add Stabil to a full tank. I use the stabil marine and triple the amount. Run the tank down to at least half. 2. Park the bike, lift tank and turn off the fuel feed on carbie models. 3. When still warm, drain the oil. Let it all run out, and let it sit overnight. This will get a lot of the moisture in the engine out as well as it condenses when its cooling. 4. The next day, add new oil and filter. Remove spark plugs. Open the air box and expose the intakes for the throttle bodies or carbs. Give them a spray with fogging oil while you crank the engine. Keep the switch to OFF so the engine just turns on carb models and make sure the spark plug caps are covered so they don't ground on the engine. You really just want to spray enough so it gets to the back side of the valves and oil pressure gets up to turn off the light (to distribute the new oil). 5. Spray a few spritzes in the spark plug holes. Put the bike in 1st gear and turn the engine by rolling the rear wheel (the correct direction!). It's easier if you have it up on a paddock stand. 6. I leave my battery on the bike and put it on a tender. 7. Last, I use the S100 anti corrosion spray on exposed metal bits. 8. Rotate the engine every few weeks to keep the belts from "setting", and move the bike if the tires on the pavement. That's all I do and it works well. I typically change the oil after around 2500 miles. FWIW Title: Re: Places to get maintenance material Post by: He Man on April 15, 2011, 07:28:32 AM i just ride the damn thing. :P
