I've decided (maybe unwisely) to remove the crankcase. The right hand side piece removed beautifully after a little encouragement and has now been put back onto the bike no problems but the left hand piece is being a little bit more troublesome. After unscrewing all of the screws and removing all of the other attachments it wont come more than about 5mm away from the bike, It sounds like it is still attached to the bike, it wiggles back and forth but I cant for the life of me figure out what is left holding it in place.
Were there any hidden things holding the crankcase on?
You need to fabricate a tool to push it off the bearing under the inspection cover.
Year and model, and I'm guessing that you are removing the case "cover". You should be able to reinstall the clutch master and lightly squeeze clutch lever. This should pop the cover off.
There is also one screw behind the sprocket cover that's easy to miss

my apologies, I was referring to the cover. its a 97 m600.
its the electrics that's giving you trouble. hooray magnetic forces. that's my guess. The cheap-o alternator case cover puller tool from SSR (among a plethora of others) works a treat.
thanks for the advice guys, eventually managed to get it off...
