Title: Destroyed part of my gauge cluster, recommendations?
Post by: Z06C5R on April 19, 2011, 06:51:33 PM
So...  I was kind of bored this afternoon (cold and rainy  :( ) and decided I'd take apart my cluster and paint that little trim piece that fills out the space between the gauges / holds the indicator lights.  It being cold / damp and me being impatient, I decided I'd accelerate the paint's cure-time by placing it in the toaster oven and heating it up slightly (like 90-100F, nothing extreme).  That was all going fine until I got impatient again and decided it needed a little more heat - I bumped it up to about 120, and not a minute later the thing had warped to shit.  I tried to bend it back to what seemed straight while it was still hot (which worked, for the most part), but it wasn't perfect and therefore didn't for the cluster right.  Frustrated, I tried bending it again, and it snapped in half.   [bang]

So, needless to say, the piece is trashed.  I could glue it, but it would look like crap and still be warped.  Anybody know where I might find a replacement (or maybe someone has a spare...)?  I doubt that little plastic piece alone is it's own part that I could order from the dealer, and I have no need for a whole new cluster.

This bit:

But seriously, Ebay says:

ask your local dealer if they have a fried gauge that you might be able to salvage a piece off of.

also take some better pictures of the front part as well as the back portion. I might have a piece but all monster/ST/SC/GT gauges look the same but have stupid little differences that make them totally specialized.  ive been looking for a replacement for my s2r one that had the lower screw piece break off for months.

It's somewhat warped and in 2 pieces, so I dunno how well pictures will represent it...  But honestly, if it'll fit between the gauges and have the right holes for the indicator lights, I can probably make it work.  I'll try and get some close-ups tonight.

that piece is easily replaceable. just may take some time to find it.  shouldn't keep you from riding though.  i wonder if its interchangeable with the later cluster center piece.

The FI bikes have more indicator lights, so I don't think it'll fit right.  I might try molding something to fill the gap, but past experience tells me it won't look too good...

they are ALL different. some have longer piece that snaps in while the lower piece bolts on, some have the lower bolt but no upper snap piece, some dont have anything at the top or bottom but rather have posts on the underside that they bolt to, SC ones are thinner to acomidate the chrome bezels... unless its the correct one it WILL NOT fit.

You've just been introduced to molded-in stress.  Courtesy of injection molding virgin resin at high heat with a cure time more than likely under a minute.

You're probably saved others from doing something like this, so don't feel so bad  :)

You'll find a piece of a junk gauge fairly quickly I'd imagine.
