Title: Which way to turn to adjust m796 headlight?
Post by: thought on April 21, 2011, 05:03:39 PM
Hey guys,

This is driving me nuts... I put in silverstars today, but now I need to adjust them... I've been screwing the bottom clutch side screw for vertical adjustment for the past 45 min and I can see any diff either way i turn it.

Is there something I'm missing here?  The light just lighting up the bottom 15 ft in front of me right now and it's annoying the hell outta me

Thanks for an help on this

I thought my monsters headlight wa like the old round ones on my zuki, and that screw adjusted it. Turnsout it doesn't. I ha to adjust the whole headlight at the ears.

hmmm... maybe i didnt torque down the two bolts holding the headlight to the forks enough and that's why it's not adjusting?

i'll try that out tomorrow...

I have had some issues adjusting my headlight.  I took it off the bike at one point, and took it apart to see what the heck was going on in there.  Mine is a 696, but I assume you have the same headlight.  There are two screws: one at the top of the headlight on the right I beileve and one on the bottom left.  Basically what you would assume logically is how you adjust it.  If you loosen the top screw, it pushes the housing away, in essence making the light aim down further.  The bottom left screw is the same.  Loosen it and it moves the housing to the right.  Tighten the screws and it does the opposite.  Just make sure you don't turn one of them too far like I did or it will disengage with the piece of the housing.  It screws into a plastic piece on the housing.  I had to press mine back into that because I turned it too many times while fumbling with it on the bike.  Hope that helps!

I just reread your first post again fyi.  If it is really bothering you, take the headlight off and take a look at it like I did.  I'm assuming you already know how to do it since you put the silverstars in.  You may have the same issue I had.  Good luck.

If the travel for adjustment is at the maximum you may need to lengthen the stops at the bottom to aim the light up higher so you have the range to make adjustment.

after looking thinking through everything again... i think the issue is that i forgot to give the low beam light the half twist to fully snug it in  [bang]

i'm guessing that it's been adjusting just fine, but with the light being only held in by the clip, it's not actually moving the light at all.

gonna take it apart tomorrow and i have a funny feeling that's the real issue.

it's sort of like a time that i put together a computer for a friend, didnt have it start, tried getting it to work for hours, finally took it fully apart and checked every connection and reassembled... and then i realized that i never plugged it in that first time.  haha

As an IT guy who has built countless systems.. I still do that sometimes.

I always get that "oh shit what did i do to this customers system" feeling in my stomach.

Yes, rule number one.  "Is it plugged in sir?"

for future reference, the screw on the brake side adjusts vertically, and the screw on the clutch side adjusts horizontally for the m796... the opposite of the m696 :\
