Title: monster 696 gauges fit on a 796?
Post by: wannabfast on April 22, 2011, 09:16:05 PM
well i noticed in a few brochure photos that some gauges light up amber, my 796 lights up white/gray however you want to look at it, when i was in for service yesterday i noticed the 696 lit up amber.. now are these cluster's interchangeable? how is the mileage stored on these units? on the cluster or on the ecu?

if you do figure this out, ill swap my amber with you. we mayyyyyy be able ti find someone just able to swap the actual light inside the electronics, risky, but worth it? i think so. lemme know

or you both could get your ECU immobilizer turned off if the Rexxer can do it.

Just take it apart and replace the LEDs.  Then you could go purple/green/blue/etc if you want.... or better yet... Rainbow Gauges!

in my experience with the automotive field, if its led, they almost never come right out, and you would need to unsolder the old ones, and put in the new ones, and make sure you change the resistors accordingly for the led value, could be a film on the backside of the panel and a standard bulb(which i doubt), could be a cover on the bulb itself behind the panel, but again i doubt this, or the panel could just be self illuminating which ive seen a few times, which probably is the case

Hi,

It's pretty easy. I changed from amber to white on my 696. First plan was to change just the LEDs. Forget it. They are very small and it was almost impossible to find matching white ones.

Finally I bought a complete dashboard of a crashed 1100. The LCD unit was cracked but the LED unit was fine. It's a very easy swap.

Cheers

Thomas

Could you post any pictures or do a write up? very interested! what about the immobilizer?

was it just an lcd swap?

I've just changed the LED unit so the immobilizer was no issue.

When I reassembled it I tried the 1100 electronic part and it worked fine. It looked like it calibrates to the immobilizer. Only thing was that the mileage was reset to zero so I didn't use it.

I'll do a how-to with pics on the weekend.

i had some issues with the leds going on and off when they wanted, the led unit is removable, i had to take it appart and re solder the connections, so as long as you can buy it seperate and the housings fit they should swap
