Title: 2001 Ducati Monster 750Dark REBIRTH!!!
Post by: MonsterInDark on April 26, 2011, 01:51:41 PM
A few months back i came across this sweet little bike full of potential, A nice running 750 with Full Remus High Mounts that make Harley riders wonder what just past them! The bike had a few issues where it had been layed down (dents on the tank) that had to be taken care of, but that wasnt a problem for me because i wanted a little project to work on, and the minute i saw her i knew that she could be SO much more  [thumbsup] So i set out to make her back into the sexy metal goddess that she should be! Thanks to you guys and your mods and tips i finished all the visual changes that will be done on the bike. I will did all the tank reshape work and paint myself, as well as the tear down, workup and paint. No professional paint guns were used, all rattle cans and a little internet know how! let me know what you guys think! and what you guys would do in the future, the only thing that isnt on the bike in the pictures is a belly pan from ItalMoto that i just got in today that i will prep and paint and post pics for later. Hope you guys like it!!!

Very nice work! [thumbsup] I think we might have a new Duc Painter in brewing... [laugh]

Q: Are those the stock gauges that came with your bike?

Great job on the painting,  Do you have a lot of back ground in painting?

Or just one of those people I hate that happen to be good at whatever they try to do  [evil]

This was the first thing that I've ever painted lol.....i just watched alot of how to YouTube videos....haha but i think its all about taking your time and not rushing the spraying process....but trust me i had my pitfalls during the process....so it was really about learning on the fly....but no....no prior background.

Thanks guys! and i went to autozone looking for some rattle can paint because i dont have an actual compressed air paint sprayer...and i saw that they had auto factory paint matching paint....so i figured that it would have to be a better quality of paint if its the same type that they throw on cars to touch up scratches and stuff....and they were more expensive...about 6.75 for a can thats about half the size of a normal spray can....but i got Honda metal flake gloss black, and GM victory red for the stripes....the only kick in the ass was that i know that undercoats of paint can affect the outer coat if the outer coat isnt thick enough...and sense i didnt want to put on 5 cans of honda black i had to paint the entire tank red first with the GM Red so there wouldnt be and difference in shades of black on a sunny day...so needless to say i had to use a few cans of red to get the tank coated properly...just to stripe it off and cut out for the DUCATI lettering....but overall im glad that i spent the extra money because people see it and cant believe that A) I did it with no prior experiance and B) that i used rattle cans!

Mounted the belly pan last night! fit great! took it off and its in its first stage of primer....will have it done by the end of the weeked....will post pictures when finished!

ya i wish that the frame was red! i love the look....but im not willing to pull apart a 10 year old bike down to the frame to have it powder coated  :-[ if i had no plans of trading up in the future then i would....but here in a few years i want to get my hands on the new diavel! that thing is the baddest mofo on the street! and i wana own it! but i love this bike to death...and its been  a blast riding and fixing it up but i think once i get a new bike ill start tracking this one...i dont think ill ever get rid of it...but yes...im jealous of you guys with red frames out there :(

Very well done!! Bravo your bike is awesome.  [thumbsup]

i've made e license bracket for tailchop, & i tried to paint it  with spray can Honda black... In preparation for painting the aluminium pieces, i use sand paper  and a primer spray can for car... But paint peel off  on some part  :-[ I wish your hard work will stay.
Congrat for your work [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

You have to make sure that the surface is scuffed up enough for the primer to adhere....and then once you pimer it, its all about light coating with the paint and then wet sanding the $hit out of it to get it smooth...then you have to allow it time to fully dry...i found on my rear seat cowl that if their is any moisture between paint layers that peeling can happen, or bubbleing...which luckily i found out early....also did you use a clear coat? a thick clear coat should help to seal the paint down...im not really sure why yours peeled up  :-\ but its been a couple of weeks now and ive been riding it relentlesly and its seen rain...heat...cold...and no signs of the paint having issues yet.... [beer] so i dont really see any issues arising in the near future...maybe a couple years down the road with some color fading...and issues like that...but i think that the paint should be fine....(crossing fingers!)

Clear coat is maybe the magic word. I will rebooth all the process with more primer layer and and add clear coat for the final touch... I think could be solve my peel off issue, i let you know!

Thanks a lot!
