Hi there fellow Ducati Enthusiast,
This is my first Ducati bike so please bare with me and my unsavinessâ,,¢.
I just recently had a 2001 Monster M900 S i.e. with just breaking the 6000 miles mark and currently loving it.
I'm loving it despite the fact that there's something wrong with it.
But I have came down from the Cloud 9 that was cause of having a magnificent bike.
Now, I have noticed some problems:
1.) Starting
- To normally start my bike, I would have to set the Idle Speed of it all the way down. It would start at one push.
But it gets a little rough, once i roll the Idle Speed off, It would die.
Trying to remedy this, I changed the Spark Plugs.
Found out that the Spark Plugs were being fouled since it was dark when I replaced it.
**As I replaced the Spark Plugs, I rechecked the plugs again after 200-300 miles of riding. It was smoky black 1/4 of the way down.**
2.) Low RPM Struggles/Bogging Down
- From the 1k-3k RPM, the bike struggles a little bit. It would shake the whole handle bar as and would make the bike hesitate.
You wouldn't believe how many times it would shut off on me the first times ive had the bike.
I temporarily result in maneuvering the clutch a little more to engage the bike in a higher rpm, thus a smoother transition.
Other than that, the bike is very comfortable at high rpm's.
- I do know that this is one of tell-tale signs that my bike is running rich.
3.) Gas Smell coming from the Exhaust
- Everywhere I ride, as soon as I start the Duc, it would send out a foul stench of gas from the exhaust.
I'm absolutely positive that it is not a leak from the Tank. Nor a leak anywhere else.
I would stand a good 30-40 feet behind the bike and I would smell it.
- I am also aware that this is another sign that the bike is running rich.
4.) Occasional Popping on Decel
- Now this is where it got me. The first 200-400 miles ride was the unmistakable sound of popping in the airbox once I ease off the throttle and deccelerate. Then and there, I thought that the bike can't be running RICH AND LEAN AT THE SAME TIME?!?!?
Or could it? ???
- As I changed the Spark, I haven't noticed the popping since.
- I thought that this info might help you more to help me.
I've read forums and such but there is really nothing compared to communicating with someone directly.
Once I have time in my hands, I'm looking at:
1.) Synchronizing the Throttle Bodies
2.) Playing with the Idle Mixture Screw (I need help with this)
3.) Checking the connection of Engine Temp Sensor/ Electronic Fuel Injection (wait, are they the same :-\ ?)
Checking the connection of the Plug Wires to the Connector of the Plugs.
- I've read that sometimes, the faulty electrical wirings maybe the culprit.
- Planning to buy a Digital Multimeter to check the resistance (I dont even know how to use this thing... LOL!)
4.) Servicing the Air Filter
Please advice me for anything else that I am missing. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATELY APPRECIATED!
As long as I can do it, I would rather do it myself than entrust anything of my property to anybody. Knowing that my failures as of now, would make a success later.
Thanks and Cheers [beer] in Advance,
Santos

Possibly

You don't have any, they are on carbed bikes. There is a fuel trim adjustment though. You need software or a scan tool and an exhaust gas analyzer. All else should be checked first

The temperature sensor is an input for the fuel injection. Yes, this can be your problem.
4.) Servicing the Air Filter
Possibly, but it would need to be awfully dirty

Throttle position sensor adjustment, return line back to the tank kinked or pinched (easy to check and free!)

If some simple checks don't find the cause shop you trust might be a good idea at this point so you can get on the road. Post in your local club board for a recommendation.
Thanks for the advice,
I'm actually having a nice day off tom Sunday...
Will be working on it the whole day.
The bike runs great, the stuttering is the only thing that's bothering me.
