So I swapped my cheep ebay clutch pressure plate and picked up a new cover while I was at it yesterday.
So my case was naturally a bit dirty from riding over the last 2 years. Tried using some soapy water... wasnt really budging the grime so I put alittle GooGone on a microfiber and it took it right off... so I wiped down the entire clutch case... :( [bang] Then I noticed everything was really really tacky a few seconds later and realized it was eating up the clear coat [bang] [bang]. I left it be and to dry.
At this point I dont really know what to do, I knew I wanted to swap it or have it painted. But it was no where near the top of my priorities list...
What would you do? ???
On another related note. I love the Speedymoto Billet clutch case but it is only for pre2001 bikes. At the current exchange rate, that NCR piece is about $950.
Seriously, tho, I'd keep my eye on eBay. Or, you could maybe talk to a local machine shop about milling out those areas. Monsterlover is in the process of standing up operations at his machine shop and I know for a fact that he has one of those that he could use as a template. If you're going to take it off to have it painted/powdercoated, then sending it off to get machined first isn't a huge hurdle.
I might be missing something but if you just damaged the paint then what's the issue? Get it repainted when you can. If you're worried about rust then hit it with a rattle can until you either replace it or get it done professionally.
Thanks for the replies, yeah once it happened I realized im an idiot and packed everything up and went to have dinner... dont really know the extent of the damage to the paint. But mainly just not one of my finner moments because I should have known better.
Basically I was just hopping to find out there are Billet clutch cases for the 08 models for around the 500 or less neighborhood. Or having mine machined and powder coated sounds like a good idea as well so long as I dont lay out money for it and it comes out like crap. Much rather pay a few dollars extra to get something done right, rather than paying for something twice because it was cheep and broke or didnt come out how I expected.

I just had my case covers, valve covers and kickstand powdercoated. All for $100. I machined the clutch cover for "my time". All and all, I'm quite happy with the outcome. So unless you have an extra $800 lying around, I recommend going that route.

Thats what I am planing on. :) Do you have any pictures of yours that you could share? Id love to check it out.
Maybe it's the Goof Off that you meant to use... different than Goo Gone but has a similar name
At any rate, get the covers professionally painted with some durable 2-part hi-temp paint. I'd normally say powder but your dry clutch cover has that giant seal which is a pain to remove, and the alt cover has a bearing and a couple other seals as well that would have to come out. The big seal will probably have to be replaced depending on how gentle you were removing it, and the alternator bearing as well. The other little ones and the sightglasses are easily buggered if you're not gentle. That's like ~$100 worth of seals and bearings right there. Spare yourself the agony and just go paint, but get a pro to do it right. A pro like the Ducpainter perhaps. A good paint job will hold up just as well as powder for your purposes, and look just as good.
Those mag side cases are way overpriced and overrated. Also- mag has a service life, and becomes brittle over time. Mag stuff is really not suited for street use. It's for racers that frequently replace things and have the budget to do so.
You could get the case covers painted in a bronzish-gold and just tell people it's mag, nobody will be the wiser.

I decided to wash the bike today. The rear wheel had tons of Maxima on it that wouldn't come off with typical water and soap. I vaguely remembered this thread but went ahead and gave it the Goo Gone treatment.... Took it right off. Guess I will wait a few days and check it out.
I took a quick peek before I left and it seemed to be fine. Is it really that aggressive? I thought it was pretty mild stuff for working the miracles that it does
There are few places Goo Gone should be used on your bike and all of them only with a q-tip.
Be sure you are using GooGone and not Goof Off. Had a guy at work use Goof Off to get sticker residue off. Took the paint off and he got in big trouble. I wouldn't get either near my bike though on painted surfaces.

I'm glad I saw this. I've only used Goo Gone on my rims, but always followed with a mild soap wash and rinse. I always assumed it was mild, too.
It's not terrible, but for stubborn chain fling, I find that a liberal application of WD-40 works like magic. It's also good for your chain o-rings.

Good call. I'll give it a try next time around. Maxima is pretty nasty stuff. It stays put and takes a little persuasion to remove.
I use goo gone all the time on painted items.
The paint on Duc engines is not immune to very much.

+1 Even on painted ABS...never had a problem.
The engine paint sucks. Mine is cracking and peeling off like it's going out of style. The heat cycles must make it brittle over time.
