Title: Stupid What is this Question
Post by: ajohnsto on April 28, 2011, 01:17:55 PM
I went to get gas today and when I opened the cap this was stuck down in my tank.  So I pulled it out and can't seem to figure out exactly what its purpose is or how to get it to stay in place.  I assume its to prevent backsplash from getting on the tank when filling up but I can't seem to get it far enough down to let the gas cap close.  Am I just not pushing it in hard enough or am I missing something obvious.  Anyways here are the pics:

Thanks in advance

It goes in the gas tank filler hole to keep gas from splashing back out. In reality it just ends up falling inside and doesnt work well either. You dont need it. Just put it aside and keep it if or when you sell the bike.

It also prevents overfilling with fuel and keeps an air space at the top of your tank for thermal expansion.

If you remove it, it might be a good idea to make a mental note to keep an air space when filling your tank.... unless you like a crotch full of fuel. [cheeky]

And remove the charcoal canister if it is still there.  Oh, the overflow tube will take care of expansion as long as it is not obstructed.

Yeah, I was thinking worse case scenario if the tube was restricted [laugh]
