Title: Wont turn off!!!
Post by: dedwardsjr81 on April 30, 2011, 05:39:54 AM
Hey guys, New to the forum here.

I have a 99 M750, Out for a ride the other day and when I went to shut down the bike it would not turn off. It sounded like it was firing but not on all cylinders or not in time. I turn off the bike with the key and the kill switch and it did the same thing. Just kept running but not right. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas what to do/ fit this ????

Please help guys/gals

Hard to tell over the interwebs, but you may have a sticking starter solenoid and the starter was still turning the engine.  The next time this happens disconnect the negative cable at the battery and see if the engine then stops.  If you hear the starter operate when you reattach the cable...bingo!  An alternative is probe the starter connection with a test light or voltmeter.  Got 12volts down there?  The solenoid is stuck.  I like the alternative better because you don't need to worry about sparks at the battery.

Ok I will do that. Does this type of thing happen with Monsters / Ducati? Is it common for the starter to stick?

If it is the starter is there a quick fix for it, or does it just need to be replaced ?

It would likely be the starter solenoid, not the starter.  If you follow the wire up from the starter it's the next piece in line.  If it is the solenoid I don't think there is any repair, Chris Kelley may still sell one that fits, or you could get the OEM.

Not the starter, the starter solenoid (remote plunger type electromechanical switch).  If you follow the positive cable from the battery you will come to a can with a cable coming out of it going to the starter.  That is the solenoid.  Common?  It does happen.  Tapping it can get it to release, but it will probably stick again.  If you need to replace it California Cycleworks sells the Yamaha version of the solenoid.

Same solenoid, different connectors.  They send you what you need to make it work.

Ah, Dan beat me to it ;D

Could it be dieseling?

If it struck Buckaroo Banzai's overthruster vehicle after the trip through the eight dimension, surely it can strike an M750.

Could be, but I doubt it on a 750. Even after a trip through the eighth dimension.    If it is dieseling, slowly letting out the clutch while firmly applying the brakes will shut it down.

True, Howie, but OTOH, the starter burns a zillion amps.  I'd think a stuck solenoid would run it down in a minute or two, and the OP didn't say he had starting problems.  I'd take the bike to a deserted place and give it the water or Seafoam decarbonizing treatment, and maybe change to cooler running plugs for a while.  (?)

The bike is probably old enough to have hot carbon deposits, and if the misting isn't done heavyhanded it won't hurt the bike to clean it, it will just make some big clouds and zap all the neighborhood mosquitos..

The starter burns a lot less amps and develops a lot less heat when the solenoid is stuck closed after the engine has been started.  Either scenerio is possible.

No starting issues, Stats the same as it ever did. Took it out for a short ride today and it turned right off. Ran fine and no other problems. My thought was the solenoid to begin with, but I am still new to the Duc world and would like the advise from other Ducait owners.

What is the seafoam treatment you guys were talking about???

You do not need Seafoam, dedwardsjr81, you can use water.  The idea is to use steam to break loose carbon from the combustion chamber.  Google for different techniques.

I ride the bike to warm everything up, typically to take it to a parking area away from home.  Support the tank up (make sure you are low on fuel so you do not hurt the hinge), take the airbox cover and the filter off.  Start the engine and crack open the throttle.  Have a sprayer mist hot water in the throttle bodies as you rev it up, it will tend to choke up so modulate it a bit.  After a bit you will see a white cloud behind you as the steam loosens the deposits, lowering your compression and reducing the hot deposits that cause autoignition (dieseling).  Seafoam is a solvent, and the idea is to let it soak into the deposits so they can burn off.  I prefer the steam treatment.  Have done it to my M800S once and to many Alfas over the years.

Dieseling from carbon deposits is something that doesn't get better on its own, so if it is running fine, then you probably should follow Howie's line of thinking.

Thanks guys,

I rode today and no problem with shutting down. I did order the solenoid just to be safe.

Thanks again

Has the bike ever been down on the right had side - I've seen the starter button sticking on bikes that've previously fallen down and banged the switchblock into the tank.

If it happens again, check to see if jiggling the starter button makes any difference.

But my money is on the solenoid. My first one failed on my '99 M750 in exactly that fashion at ~50k miles. The replacements been good for over twice that now.

well.. that's what it's supposed to do   ;D

so you don't drive with kick stand down (like some have)  [laugh]

still think you're joking  ;D
