Title: AEM Rear Sprocket/Carrier Concerns - Thoughts??
Post by: Amlethae on April 30, 2011, 04:33:33 PM
Hi guys,  as I was detail-cleaning my bike today I came across something that rather concerned me.  Back in June '10 I ordered and had the dealer install an AEM Rear Sprocket/Carrier on my M1100S, runs great, no issues.

But today -- 9 months laterish? -- I discovered the following:

1) All five bolts holding the sprocket on were lose.  After inspection I noted that for 2 of the bolts, the magnesium guides were sheered.

I tightened the 3 bolts I could to 30 ft/lbs, and the two noted above only to as snug as I could - est about 15ft/lbs

2) The chain has a lot of lateral play in it.  An extreme amount when I compared it to the lateral play on my wife's 696 (negligible play).  Note the gap between the teeth and the inner sides of the chain:

I made note when I ordered the sprocket that I had a 525 pitch chain.  Is this normal?

I'm really ignorant when it comes to the final drive elements... I should learn but haven't gotten the balls.  I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions... and I'm wondering at this point if I've just been a hugely lucky asshole riding about 1,750mi on it this way.  Very nervous about continuing to ride on it.

Thanks guys.

Thats really werid. I have an AFAM Front sprocket (525 pitch) that they swear is 525, but when i put it on the chain, i has the same amount of play that your sprocket is displaying.

The rear sprocket on the other hand has some movement but not that much. I run a Driven rear sprocket.

That rearsetup does look bling bling though!!!

The difference between a 525 and 520 is 1 mm, so it looks like that you have a 525 chain on a 520 sprocket.

This is something that your dealership (who is now GONE with good reason) should of picked up on in 2 seconds. I know i certainly did, Got the sprocket  put it against the chain and instantly realized it was too small. Its still sitting on my table.

Quite a good point.  A bit pissed about that... not even a brief mention at any point.

What's the verdict guys?  Should I stop riding until I get a proper sized sprocket?  Do I need to get a new chain as well?  Bugger.

Is that sprocket carrier really magnesium? I was not aware they made those. Looks like gold anodized aluminum to me.

Since we're on the topic of things the now out-of-business dealership decided not to tell me: they never installed the 14T front sprocket I ordered/paid-for!  It was on my receipt when I took delivery, and now that I look through the boxes I never got a front sprocket with the bike (ie: the one that should have been taken off).

Today, as I'm debating converting to 520 (based on the discoveries I mention in this thread) I decided to count the teeth on the front sprocket just to make sure... 15 teeth!  I counted 5 times cause I really couldn't believe it!

AND to top that shit all off... look at the washer around the nut... WTF is going on with that and what the hell do I do to get it off to change it to a 520 pitch?!

the washer is like that to prevent the nut from backing out ( it faces the broad side of the nut). you just unfold it with a screw driver and a hammer and then release the nut.

Yea sounds like ducati soho alright (now you wonder why i told you to stay the hell away from them initially...) they are a bunch of crooked thieves. Good riddance they are gone. Everyone working there was a complete douche bag who thought they were too hot to handle.

Anyway... 520 has one main draw back... which really apply to you since i dont think you put that many miles on. But 520 wears faster. and as far as HP goes, i highly doubt you'd notice it.  Just buy a 525 sprocket and call it a day.

if you DO decide to go 520, i have a 15T front sprocket that you can have for free. Its BRAND NEW as in still in packaging.

Not sure if you can get some form of compensation for that carrier (its still useable for sure, , but if you are willing to let it go for cheap.... ;) nothing a little sandblasting and a dab of TIG welding + a hand file....+some powdercoat cant fix!!!(sorry i am a cheapskate when it comes to blinging out my bike. I pretty much will not buy a new bling piece because my bike is a daily rat beater, but i cant pass up on a good deal!)
