Title: DIY radiator screens Post by: BoDiddley on May 05, 2011, 04:35:41 PM I finally finished my radiator screens and they turned out pretty good. Probably nothing new except for maybe the source of screen and using the door edge trim. Saved more than a few bucks and IMO it looks cleaner and is definitely stronger than the aluminum guards made by Cox, $134.00. It seems like it would keep a good size bird from doing any damage. The plastic you might question but the straps I used were heavy duty and I think I might restrap it every couple seasons. I have confidence they will hold. If I had to do it again I would use 1/8" squares on the oil cooler and 3/16" on the engine cooler which would work better for tire trash. This is the 3/16" screen. I did a good search for SS screen other than Ebay and could not find any better pricing or smaller pieces. With the screen, glue, trim and ties I ended up with around $57.00 in it.
Make a pattern out of cardboard, cut to fit tight in between the ridges. Actually the engine cooler ended up being almost pressed to fit on its own. After cutting to fit the door trim stick the edges in and let super glue drip down into the guard on each wire end. Don't spare it use a bunch but be aware it might run out the ends. It gets very solid so bend it to fit before doing the final glue bit. The SS is a bit hard to cut so use a strong set of side cutters, and you will find it is hard to keep it all perfectly straight but in the end it will work. OH Yea, Keep your nose out of the the gas coming off the glue. [roll] For the the oil cooler I used two ties run through the coils. Probably would work on any style Radiator.....What do yeas think?
