Bike looks great!

Those pipes on the last "inspiration" pic are tits.  If you can do something custom like that that would be great.

Something like these less the decals and shiny hardware would be cool...

Hey BlackKat, it's Brian, I met you at the dealership...talked about monsters for a while.

Talk about an upgrade! I can't wait to see what the finished bike looks like. Both times that I came in it was up on the rack. Good to hear that you had her out, take what you can get around here with the weather.

I still need to drop by and show you my little beast! Keep us updated on the build...

Hey Brian! Bring that BEAST by! Wanna see that exhaust!

Corey,
No tank swelling issues there, I just have the cover at the body shop getting sprayed to match the top of the triple. There is such thing as too much carbon :)

lucky you...
my tank latch has become nearly inoperable at this point...

ill reserve full judgement until its done but right now, its looking really busy.

my thoughts;
the yellow headlight fights with everything, the red stitching doesn't flow with anything either and the sweep at the end of the channels fights the movement of the bike. too much CF for a "retro" build. and if your painting the cowl, why bother having it made out of aluminum?

i guess I just dont really see the old style lines. the major lines of the the trellis frame, SSS, disk brakes, USD forks and monoshock is (gloriously) modern. the details of the CF clip ons, CF front fender, CF sides, billet all around and an open clutch are all modern too.  a yellow headlight and an oldschool bikini fairing just sort of confuses the whole thing and makes it look like its trying too hard to be retro, much in the same way that honda cafes can.

CF, black, red, yellow, silver, grey, 50s  street fairing, 70s seat, modern frame/swingarm, racing ergos... all great elements but it has too much stuff going on in to many directions, it lacks the focus and simplicity that define a cafe bike.

A few things:

1:  why ask for opinions if you're going to shoot holes in them so quickly?

2:  It is MY opinion that you ARE mixing and matching whatever strikes your fancy without regard to the bikes' overall aesthetic.

3:  if there are NO RULES as you state above, then why point out what defines a CR?!?

This isn't a CR (IMO), but more either your CR influenced S2R, or a resto-mod S2R.

Take my opinion FWIW...  Or shoot holes in it.  Don't care.

Two biggest things to remember:

1) F*ck what others think, it's not their bike...

2) Opinions are like arse-holes...

really? no paramaters? harley a bagger is a cafe bike if I throw some checkers on it? a busa is fair game if I put a pedestrian slicer on the fender?

there are layers and layers to what makes a cafe bike and exceptions to all the rules but at its heart a cafe bike is a minimalist design with a clear focus on speed. its the one thing that links bikes from the 50s Nortons to the modern day work of breitling and radical ducati.

I agree with the two above me. I'm not bashing and there certainly are some sweet bits on the bike but as of now, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Maybe it's too early to judge or maybe it's just the pictures but there needs to be some sort of common denominator

I think we all know that posting a bike on this place is begging for feedback, both positive and negative.

People tend to forget that forums don't reflect facial expressions, tone or general meaning without clear words so sometimes things come across as demeaning or just place mean.

but i can say, with a few exceptions, people aren't trying to be mean, they just are passionate about our brand.

personally there are a few things I like about this bike and a few I question, but Stuart is right, it's his bike and his passion

For a better idea of what "defines" or doesn't define a CAFE bike, check out www.caferacerculture.blogspot.com (http://) (http://) (http://) om a daily basis...

Let's be very clear about one thing. This link currently is NSFW.
Big ass titties right on the front page.

Not that that isn't great... Just not between 9 and 5 for me...

I didn't mean to shoot holes in his opinion. I was a bit surprised as I have been applauded by multiple REAL Cafe guys for the start of it and the ideas behind it. Guys that lived in London during the period, guys that build Cafes on a regular basis, in short people that are to the Cafe Racer what most of us are to the Monster.

I certainly understand the varied opinions. The biggest thing to point out, is the bike is a running, on going project that is very much in its infancy. I'm doing it my way but with respect to what it is and some of the classic things that make a Ducati a "Ducati". There are and will be more Cafe influenced bits of design. My plan visually may not come across in my words and early pictures enough to call her a Cafe yet, but it will be.

Ultimately, the carbon side panels will be gone and mounts trimmed, The modern Termi will be replaced with something simple. Canisters replaced and wires rerouted and hidden. It will be far more naked than it currently is. I've only had the bike a month. The new tank won't have and stripes...Really, EVERYTHING is being toned down.

Someone mentioned it couldn't be a cafe because it has modern brakes and suspension...That makes little sense as well. Why have speed if you can't control it? Look at the new Nortons...all have Ohlins and Brembos from the start...Or the recent failed Buell CR...modern performance, modern suspension and brakes, but still a cafe.

There is an obvious link from the Cafe bikes from Norton, Triumph, and BSA to the modern sport bikes of today... Monsters account for more than half of the Ducatis sold. I just want to make sure mine is different!

i just read a really interesting article on the future of the cafe scene in "cafe racer magazine."
The featured "cafe" bike in that article was a stripped down superbike with more modern suspension and brake doo-dads than you could shake a stick at.

it's silly of us not to embrace modern technology, and combine it with the ideals and ideology of the past.
IMO, "cafe" has very little to do with the bike itself.

absolutely not what I said.

you said you would have classic lines with modern materials/functionality.  I was saying I didnt see any classic lines in the build direction. necessary as all the modern components are they still form the lines of the bike and while the monster has an "oldschool" or "classic" silhouette  with its fairly long flat seating area and round headlight those lines can quickly be obscured or lost when the design gets too busy. A custom bike is not parts added to define a bike, a custom bike is a bike that defines what parts it gets. the other way is simply accessorizing.

I forget who but a very famous designer was asked about how he consistently came out with clothes that were instant classics his answer was along the lines of "first I make a design, then I slowly remove things until its pure form emerges".

if that's what he implied i think it was a little harsh. but each to their own, as long as your bike puts a smile on your face and doesn't bite u on the arse, your on the right track.

... the fairing made itself most famous from a Guzzi LeMans in the 70's...
the one you have appears to be a copy of the one found originally on the 50's AJS 7R
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wpYIM0LewWY/TeSQRaZH4OI/AAAAAAAAE_4/ReGCnsR7U7c/s400/%252333+AJS+7R%252C+Bathurst+1978.1.jpg)

the guzzi one is much larger, more angular and swept back. it also was designed to envelope the forks
(http://corporation.motoplanete.com/moto-guzzi/photos/850lm1(380pixels).jpg)

while the guzzi one is clearly derivative of the AJS one, many others are equally so and just as recognizable. similar styles have been used on everything from vintage scooters ;(http://www.ekmpowershop2.com/ekmps/shops/readspeed/images/flyscreenredsxtv.jpg)
to the triumph thruxton(http://www.triumph.co.uk/images/thruxton_overview_main_2008.jpg)

hell, even the jack of all trades "viper fairing" is somewhat similar (http://blufiles.storage.live.com/y1phLDyNlOFXUhNBwE6CGahUHPBoUhchiVfEjImlv--sVV_j6wa8_1jLnjcxDAZUjJYqAqmnZAB5l0)

I guess you just clarified that the cafe style isn't so much as timeless, but certainly stretches over decades with only marginal change.

the "cafe style" is vintage race style. the AJS posted above isnt a "cafe style" its a top of its class race bike. the lemans isnt "cafe style" its a typical 70s to early 80s naked bike with a bikini fairing styled after the guzzi that was raced  at lemans 3 or 4 years earlier. the differences in style, function and purpose are massive.  other than covering close to the same real estate on the bike, the too fairings look totally different (FWIW, the guzzi one with its angular shape would probably flow better on the monster with a bit of trimming)

while the title of "cafe bike" does give very vague guidelines (thankfully) its much the same as the word "sandwich". while tuna fish makes a great sandwich, and peanut butter makes a great one, together they are shite. at some point you have to decide which one to make.

I apologise if I sound aggressive but to look at a picture of a 50s AJS and an 70s guzzi and say that there are only "marginal changes"  gets me a bit cranky.

the bike is looking much more cohesive with the tank and tail matching, I look forward to seeing it all come together.

Also the yellow headlight that I didn't think I could ever like fits in there very nicely

I like the exhaust... Arrow for Kawa Z750?

I was going to do the exact same thing for my S2R1k before I got my S4RS (I have 2 un-used Arrow cans now sitting in a box somewhere).

I still don't like the headlight or fairing thing, but it's looking a lot better the more complete it gets.

definitely go to ceramic black on the whole exhaust. will flow with all the other black really well.

the light is great, not sure about the fairing... but just like mine, to each their own right.

as far as next projects.. not a bobber...

I LOVE the old board track racers.

figure out how to put 19in hoops front and rear, reduce everything to minimal on the frame, single front rotor (yes I know they didn't have brakes), upsidedown handlebar etc. to get superlight oldschool

A ceramic black exhaust system might be too much black on the bike.  You have a nice balance right now. I'm having my exhaust headers done up in black right now for my mostly black bike.  I'm worried it might be too much of a good thing.  We will see.

The swingarm and rearsets would look good in black.

I suppose this is a good sign as I feel she's still not there.

I do have some new ideas for a few things that I have already completed. I do like the seat, but I might be able to one up it still. The swing arm for sure will be black soon. The rearsets...well, Chris from Cycle Cat has promised to let me know as soon as he has theirs produced again. I also have considered polishing the exhaust..but still undecided for sure.

Thanks for the feedback guys. As new items are added (or taken away) I'll keep the pics coming.

Cheers!

I am really diggin the bike man.  I remember seeing it in person when I stopped there to get my new tank for the 695 dark.  I had talked to you about getting a steal tank for my monster, do you know where I guy like me can find one for a good price.  Also I read in your posts that you guys have some termi and arrow take offs laying around the shop...are those used cans?  Would N.O.D be willing to sell them?  Just wondering on price.

I will have to stop down some time soon and see the bike again in person.

Thanks

Have you put any thought into tearing out the airbox and going with pods?  I've seen a couple of Monsters where they did that and it looked fantastic, plus I feel like that's the kind of mod where it'd really fit in well with the vintage racer "Do we really need this on here?" cafe aesthetic.

Also, whereabouts in northern Ohio are you?  I grew up in Mansfield and still pass through from time to time.

The swing arm and linkage will be powder coated black and I'm toying with the idea of changing the frame color.

COLOR SUGGESTIONS ANYONE!?

I'm sorta traditionalist on frame color...matte gold, red, titanium gray...subtle but certainly not stock for the year.

Matte gold and black looks great, in my opinion. Slap on a gold retro Ducati emblem and maybe even a gold racing stripe [drool]

A ceramic black exhaust system might be too much black on the bike.  You have a nice balance right now. I'm having my exhaust headers done up in black right now for my mostly black bike.  I'm worried it might be too much of a good thing.  We will see.

The swingarm and rearsets would look good in black.
I love the seat cowl to please could I have 1

Aside from the performance benefits..... that is gonna look so sweet with the Ohlins gold up front.

With that in mind, I would go with a raw wire brushed frame. Same finish with the swingarm. Black out the motor with accents on the fins.

I was totally stoked to see the suspension take shape. The guys at Speedymoto were kind enough to make me a custom triple for the 1098R Ohlins.
Ha ha, you make it sound like they did it as a personal favor. :D

I want a yellow headlight in the stock housing for my bike! Did that headlight come in there or did you buy it seperate? I did a quick search but could only find car headlight/offroad. Do those work? Looks so cool.

For clarification: Ducati went to the plastic headlight in mid-2007, not 2001.

I was just lucky enough to stumble upon them and will probably never ride them to there capacity!
I think that lots of us think of good suspension the way we think of a very powerful engine.  You don't get everything out of a powerful engine unless you spend at least some time at WOT running to redline.

However, you get just about everything good suspension has to give anytime you brake even moderately hard on rough pavement.  Even if you're not pushing the bike to the absolute limits, better forks should mean that the front stays more planted and stable in this case.  I contend that anyone who has to deal with potholes, washboard, cracked or broken pavement, or concrete expansion joints gets the benefits of better suspension.

Its funny you ask that...The area service manager, my tech with 30 years under his belt and the owner of the dealership ALL tell me how much cooler the "R" fork is than the "S" but none of them can tell me why...haha...I get the.."Its got gold...mumble...mumble...mumble..."

I was just lucky enough to stumble upon them and will probably never ride them to there capacity!

I had to check [cheeky] Forks are the same part numbers between S and R, but obviously cooler to say that you have R forks [thumbsup]

But painting mag covers black to look like alu is the opposite of painting alu covers gold to look like mag - worth several million cred points.

Seems like Monsters are inherently difficult to turn into Cafe bikes because of the angle of the frame. One would have to do a lot of work to modify with the back half of the frame or the tank and seat in order to get that flat profile cafe look. Case in point:

Angled frame with lots of work above (I know it's an SS, not exactly a monster)

This guy got about as close as you can get without some serious chopping and/or thin-air fabrication
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XtmnqvnkKmo/Tv4QC50dTXI/AAAAAAAAC-8/2ZseNWm5yJg/s1600/Ducati+Monster+900+caferacerspecial.blogspot.com++%25285%2529.JPG)

I'm not trying to be a nay-sayer. In fact, I'm really impressed with your skills and wish I could start a similar project. Just trying to add to the discussion and maybe a little inspiration.
Cheers, I'm enjoying watching the process!  [popcorn]

You would know better than I. Thought I saw something mentioned about it started as a 900ss, but that could have been about a different bike. It's obviously far from where it started, so whatever it was based off of is nearly arbitrary, imo.

Too much black for my taste, but another tasty bike nonetheless.  As I told you several years ago, your earlier bike was one of the inspirations for my "Scrambler" inspired bike.
