Title: Catless
Post by: arai_speed on May 09, 2011, 09:38:56 AM
Not my Monster - my truck!!!!

Someone decided they needed it more then I did!

This happened during my lunch work out at the YMCA in La Canana Flintridge.

I called my dealer just to see what it costs new...wait for it....$1650!!!  I'm heading up to the valley in what now sounds like a tank tractor to have an after market unit installed for for $200.

Frustrating!

Wait, they took it off your truck during a lunch break? Crazy! Any chance that it fell off?

Yes - this happened while at the gym.  From the looks of the perfect cuts to the pipes, and being that the oem unit was welded on, it's very unlikely that it fell off.  Unless it fell off while parked and then cat gnomes made of with it.  I guess that's a possibility :-)

One would think somebody would have noticed a dude under the truck sawing away...

Toyota cats are a very common item to be stolen last few years. Thieves get about $50 for them. You sure it was welded on? The cuts look too perfect for someone lying on the ground with a sawzall trying to make a quick getaway. They are usually bolted on. When replaced, mechanics are welding on the new ones, making the bolts hard to get to, and some owners are even fabbing skid plates that cover just the cat.

If you look at the side of the pipe to the right the edges look bent in, exactly like a plumber's pipe cutter would do. Not that I've tried but I'm sure a pipe cutter would make fairly easy work of that exhaust pipe?

Not sure what they used or how it was installed from the factory.  My uncle who is a mechanic for Toyota said thieves use a chain pipe cutter which does the job in no time. Kinda like this:

Like duc750 stated, one of the pipes is/was bent and the edges of the pipes are shiny and metallic as if someone filed them...or in my case cut them off.

That would lead me to believe as you do.
