Title: 1978 Honda CB400 Hawk TII
Post by: He Man on May 10, 2011, 12:26:40 PM
I called progressive to pay my insurance the other day and ended up getting a combined quote for a 2nd bike...turns out its DIRT cheap to run a 2nd bike (only $80 bucks a year!). So i fancyed my thoughts on CL with a 1978 Honda CB400 Hawk T2. My brother has been a big fan of riding after seeing this movie about that revolutionist Che Guevara but never really jumped into it. So I sent him a few pics of some old school bikes and he started looking on CL. One thing led to another and one day I was driving home with a CB400 in tow.

The guy wanted $500, but I managed to get it for $350. Cost was split between my brother and I. So in essence i sold an HID kit and picked up half a bike that doenst even run....

But I got her home and she sat in my garage till i started tinkering with her last night. I am going to completely strip her down and my brother will do all the fabbing and painting. Shes only got 9,000 miles on her (assuming thats right) and was recently inspected to run in 2009 in NYS. Clear title and all.

But so far the few things i have found out that are wrong

1) both throttle cables are snapped and will need to be replaced.
2) Key tumbler is also broken. one of the wires snapped, resoldered it. but jiggling the key will shut the power off
3) best part, there was a chopstick stuck in the fuel line from the petcock to the carbs. (no idea how this happened)
4) motor needs some gaskets repalced.
5) the previous owner stripped the seat down to the pan. I still have some fiberglass sheets left from a 999 fairing repair. I think i may copy the seat pan since its all rusted.

After i cleared the obstruction and cleaned the carbs, she fired up. but she is drinking gasoline and the plugs are fouling quickly. so the jetting needs to be redone.

But here she is. 38hp. they say its 55mpg city. We will see once i have her together again. down with gas prices!!! not looking to drop a boat load of money on her either.

Nein.

CM400T was the automagic model.  CM400T and CB400T were otherwise identical (mechanically)

I had one:

in '78 they made a hawk 1 and 2 (CB400TI and CB400TII).  both are 395cc, 3-valve, 5spd

I don't know the difference... Honda used that twin on so many bikes

The CM and CB used the same engine, just the CM400T (and the CB400A) had the hondamatic.  I forgot they had the hondamatic on a few models.

CM was more cruiser-ish than the CB, but nearly the same.

Chinese food garbage land slide casualty. It's your bike's soul mate.

This find was destiny.

offhand, have you tried rider insurance instead of progressive?  i switched over from progressive after i found out that rider gave me full coverage for about $400 less than progressive a year.

and looking forward to seeing what you do with that bike ;)

78 Type 1 was spoked wheels and drum front, T2 was mags and disc.   They were called Hawks.  80 it ended up looking more like it's big brother the CB750F,  79 they introduced CM series...  in 82 nighthawks used a 450 version of the same engine.  Automatics were noted as CB/CM 4**A
Peter Egan made it famous in 78 racing against RD's and winning

in '78 they made a hawk 1 and 2 (CB400TI and CB400TII).  both are 395cc, 3-valve, 5spd

ive been setback on this project due to lack of time. So far, i need a new crank, but i need to split the engine. I got the tool to remove the flywheel, but dont have to the tool to hold the crank in place while i remove the flywheel, and also, i started remodeling my garage so everything is everywhere. One the motor is done (not sure when) ill start modding the subframe.

I know this thread died, but I'm curious if you got anywhere.

I bought the same bike in worse looking shape (but running).  $600.  For another $300-400 in parts I ended up with this (probably could have done it for half, but I lack experience/tools).  Not bad looking with the right seat.

beautiful!  [thumbsup] where is that seat from? the before picture looks an awful lot like my old CB400A that's been stuffed in the back of a garage for the past decade or so

clean looking!

i never got the bike back together.  :-\

the motor was the main issue. Ive been looking for a running motor for the past year. no joy.

with all the hippies around here, they are starting to ask ridiculous prices for these bikes. everyone wants 3k+ its NOT worth that much. there are too many of them out there to be worth anything significant.

Yeah, that's why I ended up with the Hawk.  Was looking at the mid-70's CBs, but ran into the same 3k problem you did.  But Hawks have NO aftermarket and aren't compatible with most CB parts, so the hipsters avoid them and you can find them on CL often in my experience.  Maybe they're more common in PA area, e.g.:

Anyway, it's a blast to ride but I'm moving to NYC in a month and can't keep two bikes, so I may have to get rid of her.  :(
