When I cold start my bike '06S2R1000 with 26k miles it doesn't want to stay running unless it's completely warmed. Even then the idle cycles and hunts from 900-1500 rpm and it may stall. To keep it running I have to keep the throttle cracked when I hold in the clutch. By the way is has the DP ECU and Termis.
A mechanic suggested I shoot Seafoam spray in the throttle bodies from the airbox because carbon build up be a problem in how the stepper motor is being told to work by inputs the cpu is getting. I tried this but I don't think it really helped...
Should I just throw down $150 and take it to the dealer and have them hook it up to the matheis diagnoser?
My gf's S2R(800) is so simple...just a fast idle switch...that starts everytime with no problem.
Try taking the stepper motor loose and plugging the air ports to see if the idle still hunts. You would need to remove it to get any kind of cleaner up in the moving bits and also check the electrical connector for corrosion.
What's a stepper motor?

What's a stepper motor?
My guess is:
A ECU controled device used to to maintain RPM on a cold engine by adding more air to the mix.
It's a fancy smancy idle advance.
and I'm glad my current bike doesn't have it. [cheeky]
I too have a stepper motor, and dislike the poo poo out of it. Can it be taken off? ???

Oh, you mean like a choke? (Only the choke restricts, not add, air to the mix for a cold engine.)
It works like a small secondary butterfly valve that the ecu can control. If it gets sticky or slow to respond I could see how it might make the idle hunt. I've taken mine off but then you need a fast idle button like the 996 or a lever to bump the idle on cold starts.

Just for future if I ever decide to get a newer bike:
I'm assuming it's just that easy to remove, and the ECU doesn't know the difference?
I thought the newer bigger bikes used a push/pull throttle. The 996 just uses a pull throttle. Did you change it up, or did just the 996 throttle housing still work?
I've got the DP ecu and there have never been any error codes or check engine lights. Maybe with the stock ecu but I don't know. I *think* it might add some trickery to setting the TPS but I have not touched mine and it runs fine. I just added the bottom half of the 996 housing - there is or was a tech article on here on doing it.

Thanks.
I have the 996 housing on my S2R800.
For some reason I thought the S4RS had a push/pull throttle, but I guess not.

I've gotten a few tools from this guy and they have all been top quality.

If I remember correctly you used to go to BCM.
