Title: Painting Pipes Post by: ZachDDill on May 13, 2011, 06:49:47 AM I am a 17 year old High Schooler and I was wanting to get new pipes, my problem is I have no money. My friend was telling me something about getting them painted with some type of ceramic paint? Does anybody know anything about this.. Your help would be very appreciated.
This is also my first post so I apoligize for any errors or things I should not be posting. Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: Mike Qube on May 13, 2011, 07:03:41 AM I painted mine with BBQ paint and the side of my motor too.

You can use exhaust paint to paint your exhaust, but the downpipes get VERY hot and usually cook the paint off after a while. There are several companies that do ceramic coatings, here is one: http://www.jet-hot.com/ (http://www.jet-hot.com/) welcome to the board, what do you ride, and post pics. 17yo? and you have a monster? Lucky little bastard. Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: Heath on May 13, 2011, 11:32:19 AM http://www.vhtpaint.com/flameproof.html (http://www.vhtpaint.com/flameproof.html)

Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: Heath on May 13, 2011, 03:12:40 PM For posting pictures
http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=109.0 (http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=109.0) Sorry for posting the VHT link with no words. I was on the way out the door but wanted to be sure I posted that. VHT is good stuff. Duplicolor used to make a really good exhaust paint. Duplicolor bought VHT though and dropped their own exhaust coating to promote VHT. If you don't want to drop the bucks for ceramic coating (like powder but higher heat tolerances) then that is the way to go. Also if it fails not like you dropped a lot of money on it. Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: ZachDDill on May 16, 2011, 04:14:32 AM Saturday night I went to Home Depot and bought high heat paint, I painted them Sunday morning and I am very happy with the result, considering it cost 4 dollars and I did it myself, having no painting experiance. I will post pictures sometime today when I am not in school. Thanks everybody for the tips, they helped a lot.

Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: ZachDDill on May 16, 2011, 04:39:55 AM I use to, I will next year tho. I always feel like the Bad Ass riding to school on a Ducati, I just can't wait to get her painted up red and maybe some new bar end mirrors.
Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: ducatiz on May 16, 2011, 05:54:30 AM LOL..
you are the bad ass riding a Ducati to school!! go you! Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: DucDodgers on May 16, 2011, 05:54:57 AM I am in the middle of painting my pipes. I'm using, like everyone has said, some high temp exhaust spray cans. One tip I can offer is look up how to's for cleaning and prepping your pipes. And USE A PRIMER!!! I got lazy and skipped this step and now I'm regretting it big time, I have a lot of sanding and respraying ahead of me [bang].

Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: Heath on May 16, 2011, 06:07:29 AM For VHT and Dupli Color they do. I used a primer when I did my headlight ring. Made for very even results.
Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: ducatiz on May 16, 2011, 06:09:28 AM interesting. i always did a coat, sanded it and then 1-2 more coats. never used a high temp primer.. hmm
Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: DucofWestwood on May 16, 2011, 03:01:46 PM what's the consensus on painting "nice" exhaust pipes? in other words, for those who have painted theirs, were they stockers, or a more pricey after-market set-up?
reason i ask, i've got a fairly nice remus system on my bike. i wouldn't mind painting it black, but i'm wondering if that would be sacrilege and/or something i would regret. any thoughts from the peanut gallery? Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: ducatiz on May 16, 2011, 03:34:59 PM Its undoable. Blast it off
Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: speedknot on May 16, 2011, 05:38:30 PM VHT [thumbsup]
Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: Heath on May 17, 2011, 12:04:16 PM I was at Lowe's yesterday and saw they had a Rustoleum Automotive paints. That also included the high heat 2000ยบ F Primer, Gloss Black, Low Gloss, and Flat Black. Priced better then the automotive stores have them for too.
Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: blueorb on May 17, 2011, 07:23:25 PM I am really liking the sound of this. Couple of questions please.
- The bolts that hold my pipes in place are rough looking. The previous owner mentioned that if I were to take them off I would need to heat the bolt up (red hot) so that I do not break the bolt/head. That make sense to anyone. I can't just torque the bolt until if comes loose? - Before you prime or paint do you need to prep the pipes in anyway (sanding or what not)? - How many coats are you guys putting on your pipes? Thanks all. Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: ducatiz on May 18, 2011, 04:15:59 AM I am really liking the sound of this. I can't just torque the bolt until if comes loose? do you mean the copper locknut on the head? i've never done anything likethat. the stud may come out, but those are easily replaced. just screw in another. Quote - Before you prime or paint do you need to prep the pipes in anyway (sanding or what not)? - How many coats are you guys putting on your pipes? Thanks all. sanding will help because you will knock off any baked grime. i used a brillo soap pad on mine and washed them at the same time (cold), then let them dry. i didn't use primer. i wasn't even aware that high temp primer existed. i've found that high temp paint is far more adhesive than regular paint tho. 2 coats for me. let the first one dry tacky and then go again. Title: Re: Painting Pipes Post by: ZachDDill on May 18, 2011, 04:20:43 AM So two days after I paint my pipes I get a major oil leak and my back tire flung oil all over my pipes so now I have large dark spots all over my pipes.. On top of that, she is unrideable till I get her fixed.
