Title: Callin on Ducati Rider's for 2011 Rolling Thunder
Post by: Zulu on May 14, 2011, 01:37:34 PM
Was thinking of having a little ducati rollin thunder this memorial day weekend to honor all the veterans of past and present.

We could all agree on a spot somewhere in Northern Va or MD and possibly ride to Wash DC .

Please fill in with suggestions and advices.

Thank you :)

no offense to anyone when I say this...I WILL NEVER DO ROLLING THUNDER AGAIN....I did it several years ago...rode with a contigent of people down to the Pentagon lot and then hung out twiddling my thumbs most of the time...looking at a lot of Harleys(there were a few non-Harleys, but there were few and far between-and lemmee tell you, the ATGATT look drew more attention than anything else it seemed)....most of the people there, were only there because it was like the "in" place to be.....I would honestly say that a vast minority were actually there to honor veterans and the origional spirit of the event...so after wasting several hours sitting around the lot...I finally got to move out of the lot ( which once you are in the lot, you aren't easily going to get out until it is time for you to leave in the procession)  and on the route to Constitution Ave....I did the lil ride up and down...parked...got a drink as I was on the verge of dehydration due to a lack of vending in the Pentagon parking lot...then I got the f**k out of dodge...

Don't want to discourage you either, Zulu.  Been there, done that, and like zooom, would rather be somewhere else.  Doing the Constitution loop is fun, but the wait is way too long.  Think bike overheating.  Think you overheating.  If you have buddies, it can make time go faster, but to me it was a long day.

Would rather buy a vet a beer and shake his hand and then go for a ride anywhere other than there than sit out on a hot day with the Pirates stuck in a line.

Okay, where and when?

Seriously though I agree that it does seem like a bit of a hassle and for sure there are folks there who are only there to be there. Having said that I try to go every other year, alternating with a run over to the Springfield Mile. I ride one of my Victory's and I've noticed the last couple of years more brands and types of bikes, though it still does seem to be a Harley affair. I find most people there to be quite easy to get along with and wish more non-Harley people would show so as to build a better understanding between riders, although I'm still having trouble accepting the stunters and those that ride like idiots over in PG County.
Yes sitting in that parking lot is a pain, more vendors now and drinks/food can be found. But there is nothing quite like the sound when the bikes get fired up and rolling at 12. And personally I find it somewhat healing to pay a visit to the wall and some buddies that did not make it back from Nam. - Gene

There is a run from Patriot HD ... One time I saw a bunch of ducati super bikes too . We all can meet up at Fairfax patriot HD, and ride with them through  66 . For people who do not want to go all the way to pentagon parking lot can exit before and go to georgetown for beer or smthn and for the rest can ride to the pentagon parking lot.

Or if not we can meet somewhere else and go ride somewhere else.

How did I miss this thread! I deleted the other one.....

I'm personally cruising down with a large group of NON-HARLEYS. A mix of about 40+ sportbikes, streetfighters, sport touring, standards, cruisers, and customs. Might be a few Harleys in the mix, but they are the minority. That said, I've never done Rolling Thunder before and WILL be doing it for the experience. Myself and a couple of others are also going to do it in full uniform to emphasize the POW/MIA spirit of the event. I'd love to have a few Ducs in the mix, but it seems like most of you here aren't up for it.

this is what most sport bike people whom have done it before often do now...or they head over to Constituion and line up in the shade and wait over there...

I say do it at least once for the experience...doing it in uniform will garner attention from people who will happily shake your hand and thank you heartily...lots of them...

it may also garner some attention from MP or Pentagon Police who may give you some grief if you are riding in a way that deviates from regulation as if you were on post, being the Pentagon lot is exactly what and where it is...just something to think about...

Reg states that long sleeves (ACU top) is good to go except at night or on base, in which case you need something reflective. I don't need a PT belt for this and I wouldn't be surprised if helmets would also be put into the "optional" category when actually doing the event. I'll see what others are doing and go with the flow on that one.

You may still want to run it up the chain and get permission to wear your cammies.  There's a difference between wearing your uniform to and from work and wearing it while off duty at a national event sponsored by a charity.  It's probably cool, but just sayin...

The Marines make it simple - no cammies off base.

that was more what I was getting at...I have heard of it being frowned apon to be in regulation uniform on offtime activities like this or otherwise....

Funny how things change, back in the day we were required to be in uniform 6 days a week, course we were considered on call, Class A for travel and we could not wait to get out of uniform since it was not a good time in this country to be in uniform. I'm very glad it is a good time in this country to be in uniform and that our service members want to wear their uniforms. - Gene

+1 on that- it's nice to see respect being shown to people that are putting their lives on the line for us.

It's nice for respect to be given, but I am still uncomfortable wearing mine away from work.  Just a personal preference though...

Checking with my 1SG and CO this week to make sure there's no issues with the uniform. I never wear it outside of work unless I had to do something straight after work or if it's the uniform for volunteer services (I try to volunteer for stuff every other weekend or so like Honor Flight - http://www.honorflight.org/ (http://www.honorflight.org/)). Rolling Thunder is one of those odd exceptions.

I can't do the Candlelight Vigil. I'm working on my buddies Yamaha bike starting tomorrow and will be working on it in all of my spare time until it's done. We're both gonna be at Rolling Thunder (his will be missing a few panels) but I don't have time for much else.

Also, Neither of us will be in uniform. It's just gonna be too much of a hassle. My command was cool with it, but it seemed a bit much.

gonna do the safety wire frankenstein stitching thing we were talking about?

looking at the weather, I'd be scared you'de fall out in uniform sitting in the lot waiting.

Nope. We have all the pannels off except for the tank and the nose. Everytthing else is being sanded down and fixed right now. I'm almost done with the mold for the front valance/fairing area which is going to be 100% custom and one of a kind.

Even out of uniform we still have to wear long pants, long shirt, reflective/bright stuff, and boots. Just gotta keep up with the water intake. John's got an infected eye now so he's undecided if he's gonna go now. We should know better tomorrow.

Hello all, I don't post here often.  Below is the video I created of the Ride of the Patriots, which was from the Fairfax HD dealer to the Pentagon.  I counted 7 Ducs from the beginning of the precession to 3/4 of the way back, we were definitely the minority tenfold.  It was a fun experience, I departed at the pentagon parking lot due to a 3 hour ride to SW Va and then onward to a back road trip to WV.  The ride was definitely humbling, yet slow.  I yearned for the twisties and the air it brought my air cooled engine.  (I'm sure the rest of the ride was even more humbling, had to leave due to prior commitments (reference WV)).

Here is the video I captured (while it appears to be slow-mo it is in real time, except when people are not present and especially on 66). I can't count how many times I honked or waved at the on-lookers waving hands or waving American or POW flags.

I hope to go on one of the weekend rides posted here soon!  There is a good group of loyal Ducati Riders on this forum!

Thanks!

Thanks for sharing the vid! I watched your Blue Ridge Pkwy movie, too, and am curious about how your did the time-lapse. What editing software do you use? And is the time lapse an "effect" or do you do it manually? Curious because I've tried the manual approach with mixed results...

Thanks!  There is an option in Quicktime Pro called "Open Image Sequence".  I have a PC and opted to not purchase the pro version, I found an open source program called Virtual Dub that has worked for me.  Here are the instructions I found and used for the process:

Nice Vid.. I was on red m696 with army flak jacket. There was a black sport 1000 right next to me, was chatting with me for a while cool guy. Told my virgin ears about the tail of dragon. Once I get more comfortable that is where I wanna go for ride.

Interesting. Thanks! I ended up going with Sony Vegas (the basic version) and tried removing frames to achieve the same effect.

FWIW I've been going down there for years, we ride it on Monday after attending the AMA races in Barber and/or Road Atlanta(no longer on the schedule). Last couple of years we did not make it due to weather and the whole LEO acitivity had us not looking forward to a run down there. This year we made it to Barber for the races and did the dragon this past Monday. My advice, not worth it, it was totally packed, mostly cruisers, on a Monday! I also got Blue Lighted twice coming out of a turn at a spirited pace, about 7/10. The blue light was a warning to slow down. There are plenty of other roads in the area and for that matter you can spend 3 days on better roads in State of Va or over in SE Ohio. Just a Thought - Gene
