Title: Broke Fuel Fitting, very stupid mistake
Post by: masterh on May 17, 2011, 04:45:17 AM
so my 998 wasn't starting after sitting for a while.

I tried fuel additive (from dealer) but didn't work.

I thought 'oh I can take out the gas tank, dump old gas and fill it up with brand new gas  [bang]

so I took out the gas tank and dumped the old gas.

but I broke the fitting.  Dealer only sells whole fuel line with fittings for $200.

Luckily I found metal fitting on ebay.

I tried to take out the broken fitting to measure the size.

I thought it was wrapped with rubber hose.

the thick black rubber hose is just a cover. there is another plastic hose inside.

the fitting was wrapped with plastic hose very tight (like it was manufactured that way) so I had to cut the hose to take it out.

now I can't fit the fitting since this plastic hose is not flexible.

Is there anyway I can fit this fitting? the size of fitting is 5/16 and hose is 3/16.
since it's plastic I can't just heat it to make it flexible. (plus there might be gas left)

can I use this fuel line? there was no clamps around the fitting. can I just fit the fitting and wrap it with clamp to make sure it won't leak?  Is it easy to DIY to replace?

If I can't fix this, I would have to get whole fuel line with fittings plus labor.

Fcuk, all I wanted to do was dumping old gas, it is getting worse and worse..........

was this the CPC quick disconnect you broke? ( sorry if you posted pics, they are filtered out here at work, so I can't see em)

Those plastic quick-disconnects are notorious for breaking. Good on ya for picking up the metal fittings, as they're much more robust.

I wouldn't use that fuel line. That looks to be for a non-pressurized fuel system. As the 998 is injected, it runs a pressurized system.

Take the fuel line you've got left and go visit an auto parts store. The lines for the 998 aren't anything exotic, far as I know, and an auto store should be able to get you the proper lines.

When I changed out fittings on a 996, I had to cut the tip off the line, as the fitting wouldn't come out. Also, the clamp I used cut the line. I'd advise you to either get clamps without sharp edges, or cut up a wide rubber band (or similar thing) and put it between the clamp and the line. The OEM clamps are some sort of crimped fitting, and I've no idea where to find them, or what tool to use to crimp them in place.
