Title: Need help with DP Tail Tidy manual
Post by: Sundog on May 21, 2011, 08:00:25 PM
I have been hassling with the DP tail tidy on my 2010 M1100, the documentation is poor and the photocopied instructions have been copied so much the diagrams in some steps is just a black blob with a hand doing something next to it.

The issue I have is that everything seems to be together but it just doesn't look "right", you know what I mean? I'm also complicating things by installing the DP LED indicators at the same time, even though the less-than-helpful doco describes how to do it (sorta).

So I was hoping someone who has installed one of the DP tidies might give me a hint or two to verify I am on the right track.

I got the tail assembly off the bike after giving up on the four bolts keeping the metal side panels joint plate attached, they were just too tight and I felt I was going to ruin the hex bolt if I pushed more.

I had to take the seat locking mechanism off the plate so as to remove the plastic tail components.

I've constructed the kit as best as I can see but the step where you install the left LED indicator, it says "position the left bracket, the bushing and mount the left indicator" but the diagram is all black and useless. I need to see what the bracket/bushing and indicator assembly looks like completed Can someone post some pics or a scan of the DP kit installation instructions with a visible picture of this step?

It also says in the same step to route the cables into the tray but not how or where (see below for my best guess on the brackets and the cable route)

Is this right? I can see the holes align for the four screws with the rubber bushes so I imagine this is to give strength to the indicator mounting. I've passed the cable over the bracket and into the tray (see below) but where do the 2 bushings go?

Because I had to also unscrew the seat lock mechanism from the metal plate its quite fiddly & constricted and hard to put it back, any advice on the best way to replace it?

As requested (elsewhere), my input on the DP tail chop.  Firstly a disclaimer: I didn't even try and interpret the instructions that came with the kit.  Instead there is a very well written (plus lots of pictures) thread on installing an Evotech tail tidy on 'another' forum, which got my old tail off.  I just made it up from that point!

I didn't do a comprehensive photo walkthrough for this, so I have just gone back and taken a few shots of what is there now:

This is how I routed my wiring.  As you can see it is a complete mess!  I had all the resistors that came with the Rizoma indicators to deal with, plus my dodgy attempts at splicing the wires together.

With the seat latch mechanism back in place.  It looks very tight but remarkably all fits in. In fact, once the tail is in place there are plenty of small gaps you can get to from the outside and tuck away any loose ends.

The bolts that hold the tail on.  The green arrows point to spacers that came with the DP kit, the rest is from the original tail.

A very 'busy' photo.
- Like a few people, I couldn't manage to undo the main bolts (green circles) so made it hard on myself trying to attach the seat lock.  I overcame this by getting everything prepared as per photo 2 above.  I then held the whole tail roughly in place (it sort of suspended itself on the ends of the frame) and fished for the bolt holes in the seat lock mecanism with the two hex bolts marked with red arrows.  Once I had hooked this I tightened it on and let the tail sort of hang by the lock mechanism.
- The tail is then secured by the four bolts show in photo 3 above.  The black bolts go through the rubber holes marked 1 and 2 and the metal bolts and washers screw into these from below.  The two holes marked 1 correspond with the holes on the bottom that you marked with yellow circles on your first photo.  It can be a bit tricky getting the black bolts through the various layers but at this stage they are not tightly bound so you can jiggle them and get things to line up.  Whilst the metal and black bolts come together tightly, the rubber flange on the frame makes the whole attachment feel a bit loose, but once it is all together it seems secure to me.  I added the little metal spacers, between the two layers of the frame and the new tail section at points 2.  I don't now if this is where they are supposed to go but they seemed to fit over the end of the black bolt nicely and spaced the layers appropriately (plus, isn't it frustrating to have bits left over after going to so much work!?!).

The final steps are just the reverse of taking the original tail off.  Replace the servo motor (noting how much room is available through its recess after panicking that all those wires wouldn't fit!), the tool tray and all the electrical connectors etc.  I made sure my key operated the seat latch, before putting the seat on and being stuck, unable to get it off again.  I don't know how likely this problem would be.

I hope this helped, and wasn't too long winded.  In summary:

1. There is more room for the wiring than you think and it can be tidied up afterwards anyway.
2. I think the 'bushings' you are worried about are just the bolts in my photo 3.

Good luck
